Good Morning guys, while I was at my B+M shop, I came across a group of these very bluish Silver Eagles. Even the owner admits they could be Artificial. What do you guy's think? Also, anyone ever see these in this cardboard holder? Thanks

I haven't seen that holder before but I'm not surprised. I'm am a bit surprised that they don't have toning more like the following MS69 discussed before.

From what I've seen in holders, they'd be worth trying to get graded.

I'm not an expert but I say NT. That cardboard holder is probably what did it.

How much did he want for them?

Probably NT. The silver eagles tend to tone very darkly over time. Those look like they well on their way to that level of darkness. The holder probably has a high sulfur content.

    :D:D:D Oh hell, I'll say it ...

Did they tone naturally? Yes, they almost certainly picked up their color from that holder without any other acceleration.

Were they put in that home fashioned holder with the absolute and sole intent to tone, and not protect or display? Yeah, probably ... almost certainly.

Will they grade? Good question. I wouldn't count on it ... however, I have seen stranger things, so I wouldn't bet against it either.

Are they Market Acceptable? Probably, to some buyers. I wouldn't be interested.

I always try to remember that they tone differently then reg 90% silver coins. 99% tends to tone more rapidly then Morgans walkers etc

    They look AT to me.

BTW, how do we define AT vs. NT? Is it intent? I mean, you can stick them in a holder like that to tone them OR you can do it quicker by some other means but the outcome and appearance, for the most part, are the same.

The way I look at it is the appearance doesn't look natural to me based on how they'd tone under normal circumstances. Therefore, they're AT.

I'm not sure they're actually AT (as in, I believe the holder could have done that), but that's a shade of blue that is often considered AT. Then again, Silver Eagles are a series where plenty of ridiculous color seems to be seen as NT (or at least market acceptable) and ends up straight-grading. So for these, I say it's a toss-up.

To save him the time of having to write his own reply, @ricko says they're tarnished and should be melted.

@airplanenut ..... :D Now, now... lets not be hasty.....Instead of melting, maybe a judicious dip to cleanse that horrendous tarnish..... :D;) Cheers, RickO

I know if I were to send those in, they would 100% be called QC. But of course, I get things with a little bit of tan/brown toning called QC.
