I have always been a big fan of early copper and I like the workhorse common man use of half cents. Given the expense of nice examples, however, I have only been able to collect them by type. I'm excited to share with you my new piece, graded PCGS VF-25.

The CoinFacts survival estimate for these in all grades is 1000. Finding one within this number with good surfaces, centered strike, no corrosion and nice coloration is hard. My coin does have small little surface pricks in a few areas, but these are not distracting to me. The planchet overall is great along with the even milk chocolate color (which I adore in early copper) and some crusty dirt collected in the devices.

Additionally, the quirkiness of the date with an "I" instead of a "1" is amusing and the uneven sizing of the rest of the date numbers just adds to its collectible charm. I also like the simplicity of the the Liberty design reinforced with uncluttered fields.

Along with my Fugio, this coin is the only other 18th century U.S. coin in my collection and likely my last (although I do like the 1 over 1 half cent variety - maybe someday).

    Hard planchet. Somewhat scarce to find! Is it slightly darker in person? Either way, sweet coin for sure.

    I am also a fan of 'milk chocolate', golden-brown copper.

    I dig 18th century ANYTHING.

    Those surfaces look soooo smooth to me.

    I think it is solid for the assigned grade, as well.

    No. The pic is quite accurate. The TV image was once again red shifted so this pic is better.

    Great color, smooth surfaces and even wear ... everything is spot on with this piece. Early half cents are hard to find like this. I know from long experience.

    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    Very desirable coin. Have never owned an American 18th Century coin, obviously due to the price, as it would be an only child. Would be proud to own one such as yours. Congratulations and thank you for sharing.

    It's cool too how the 18th, 19th century dirt outlines the lettering and devices making them stand out more. I like the coins overall look!

    I guess this coin is a good example of the reason I don't like early copper unless it is super PQ. I'm not liking the grade assigned or the hits. That's what makes the world go round! :)

    I like the color and surfaces are nice but the sharpness is only a Fine15 in my opinion.
