When buying cents do you prefer RD, RB, or BN?

AlanSkiAlanSki Posts: 1,925 ✭✭✭✭✭

I like BN cents but see some gorgeous cents in RB so I'm also considering RB cents now.

I prefer RB coins that are 80-90% red.

I actually like all 3. For some pieces, I go out of my way to buy high grade specimens for RD, RB, and BN.

Depends on what I’m buying. Most of the cents I buy are out of my reach in RD. RB and BN work great for me. Probably prefer RB.

Depends on the cent... Normally BN is fine, though some old cents in RD are really impressive. Mostly BN though.. Cheers, RickO

    It depends.
    For cameo proofs, red.
BN and RB, depends on the coin.

It’s just all in the deal for me:

I prefer red but only buy nice clean unspotted quality eye appeal pieces. Deal has to be there: Bid / Offer about 65 - 70 pct CPG / MV based on sales potential.

I prefer full red but with older cents I have to compromise due to cost. I have some nice RB 18th century cents, though. I’ll need to get them from the SDB eventually to get pics.

I’m not that knowledgeable on copper, but I love the look of ‘wood grain’ Lincoln’s. Are those typically RB?

In my IHC collection my 2 favorite coins were BN. Here is one:

I like 'em like this-RB with color. Or BN with color.

    My preference is red/brown.

I've had Reds that have become RB over the years. It's cost me some money.
I think that copper should be encapsulated in a nitrogen environment and the slab should be air-tight.

I like rb then maybe rd

I believe copper coins in slabs are are more inherently protected for stability but not absolutely .
    slabs are not hermetically sealed.
red coins over longer periods may turn more brown , because of the above or what was on the coin
when it was sealed. who neutralizes the coins surfaces. I don't ,do you.
that process alone could change the color over time from its residue.

Red gets the money, but the risk is higher if kept over long periods of time.
I have had reds in slabs turn somewhat in those black lined so called inert boxes.
I have seen many coppers in auctions with a red label that are now brown or RB.
thats why the owner is selling them.

so I refuse to buy the red ones at high premiums if the intent is to keep them in my collection a long while.

Glossy smooth browns can be very attractive coins (stable) and should not be shunned.
as they can attract the eye greatly. Early Copper collectors love these.

If you are a registry hound, you buy red.

One of the prettiest coins I ever owned was RB - if I could do a set that looked like this, I would do it.

    BN, and occasionally RB.

When I see a 150-200 year old full red Cent, I get very suspicious.

With Indian and Lincoln’s it depends, I typically like the toned versions which are often BN designated. For half cents and large cents, I definitely like the chocolate brown look.

In most cases R&B is my color of choice.

I don't like Red because it often drives the price through the roof if it's a coin that one my want list. I've also been burned a couple of times on "Red" coins that turned brown because they had been screwed with before the went into the holder. If I am going to consider a Red coin at all, it must be in a holder that is more than 10 years old. Of course that means that NGC won't honor their grading gurantee. :(

I like a nice glossy brown on large cents. Those coins can be really beautiful.

This 1820 large cents is "only" an R&B. It might be a common hoard date, but this piece knocks it out of the park.

    That 1820 is stellar

Nor will PCGS at least for color.

    BN and RB both.
And some Lincoln Memorial Cents are "RD" but have colorful toning.

In my experiences, RB examples seem to be the most attractive. They offer the best of both worlds.

Depends, although I am more of a silver guy.

Early copper in brown makes me hungry for chocolate. :DI like chocolate!

But I also like steak, rare-medium-rare, and a good red-brown is hard to beat. :p

The only RD copper I have is an 09 P IHC in PC 5 RD. I bought it in 1998 and it was in an OGH, so it had been stable for awhile when I bought it. Otherwise, it depends on what's in the wallet and the particular coin. For type Braided Hair Large and Half Cents you can pick up a RD with 80% RD for not much of a premium for a RB coin.

There is a noticeable premium for RB vs BN Matron Head Cents. I will not buy any Unc. pre 1815 copper unless it's in an OGH. I had an expensive Draped Bust Half Cent turn in holder on me, and that will not happen again.

This thread is so liberating! I've recently gotten back in the hobby and working on a type set. I've been targeting RD cents, but reading this thread affirms that it's OK to go for RB. Feels like a weight lifted off my shoulders. Guess that's a good sign of what I want to collect. I can get an MS66RB cheaper than an MS65RD, and that feels right. Thanks!

Red antebellum copper is a bit scary especially as you go further back in time (and higher in price). A couple spots, and it is over. There is a lot of doctored stuff in certified holders. I wouldn't blindly trust CAC either.
