Just a Slightly Worn Fattie Addition

CharlotteDudeCharlotteDude Posts: 3,038 ✭✭✭✭✭

A Fat-Head, to be exact. The 1813 - 1834 run of Capped Bust Half Eagles are affectionately known as "Fat-Head" Half Eagles. John Reich modified the original Capped Bust design which ran from 1807 to 1812 by enlarging Liberty's head and cap, and removing her "bust line". While I have a number of Capped Bust Left Half Eagles, this is my first "Fat Head". It's a bit lower grade than I usually like, but the look of this particular coin sold itself. Very little marks, great surfaces and unmolested skin. Just the way I like 'em...

Gorgeous Fat Head! Yeah, that's a type still on my list. I can see the attraction, for sure!!

Ouch! Doctor my eyes...after being blinded by the ugly white prongs.

    Great coin though :D

Love the color on that one, your patience must be off the chart as I don’t see you ever “not all there” coins. Another winner

Just a great coin. Minimal wear and almost ding free.

Thanks all - yes, it took awhile to find the right one and then negotiate to a number at which I was willing to make the purchase.

I have always for this portrait of liberty to be the least feminine of all designs. She looks ready for a bare knuckle boxing match.

My thoughts also, B. I've always considered this design to be one of the least attractive portrayals of Liberty on US coinage. An interesting design yes, but attractive - not so much. It's also a series that only one person can ever complete, given the rarity of the 1822 (just to name one). While I may pick up an additional date or two of this design, I'll just enjoy this one for now... not pristine, but about as perfect as one can find for the XF-45 grade.

That is a 'handsome' gold coin ;) ... I always thought it was a depiction of the designers overbearing mother in law :D
I like gold coins, and I like this one too.... Cheers, RickO

I don’t see many of that type that isn’t UNC or mishandled Cir. That one looks like the few that were really used and not melted

That has the perfect look for early circulated gold. Very hard to find without attempted "improvements" .

Under appreciated series. Much scarcer than the cap with bustline but priced the same.
