I'm not suggesting they are leading anything. But, they are clearly following the RCM down this silly path of colorized garbage.

I’m guessing hey are trying to stay relevant with YNs. They are risking losing a new generation of collector if they don’t.

How did we go from Saint Gaudens to these low relief, computer designs by committee? And now, color...

Can we say curved is high relief ;)

I think we’re here because circulation coins are low relief due to vending machines and these are coins so they need to reasonably close to what people are expecting.

Couldn't we lead by getting real artists on the payroll that know how to sculpt with their hands?

We have them but so think the future is digital.

Of note, this from Joseph Menna, is awesome. He moved to Russia to study sculpting. I do agree that Russian engravers seem another level these days. They make some insane hobo coins.

During that time I also studied privately with a group of classically trained Russian Artists who all possessed skills rivaling those of the greatest 19th century masters. To me these guys were like the last of the Jedi and their work blew anything I had seen in the contemporary American figurative art scene completely away. I knew that if I wanted to be as good as these guys, there was only one path to follow. I worked as a waiter for a few years, saved all that I could, and headed to Russia to finish my studies. My time there exceeded all of my expectations and became one of the core experiences of my life. After coming home from Russia I worked as a figure sculptor at a fine art foundry for 8 years sculpting monumental and life sized statues and portraits.

How will colorized coins fare with professional graders?

The colorized elements of select Proof 2020 Basketball Hall of Fame copper-nickel clad half dollars and silver dollars will be considered by the major independent third-party grading services in assigning a final grade.

On Aug. 28, the U.S. Mint will offer for sale 75,000 of the Proof 2020-S colorized half dollars and 75,000 Proof 2020-P dollars. Elements on the reverse of both commemorative coins are being colorized by an outside vendor to whom struck coins are shipped from the San Francisco Mint for the half dollars and Philadelphia Mint for the silver dollars.

Collectors are asking what factors grading services will consider in assigning grades to the coins.

“What if it is Proof 68 with a bad paint job?” asks one reader. “What if it peels, yellow pigments fade and greens turn to blue and orange turns to pinks or magenta. Put some colored coins out in the sunlight for a couple days and see what happens?”

Ebay pre- sale items are very minimal with only 1 seller from Canada, so far. Asking price is 3 x Mint price for the halve & double for the silver dollar. I suspect there will be a stampede @ High Noon on 8/28 when they become available on line....

Collectors will collect.... and coin collectors will collect even colorized coins from the mint....I also see these as a possible lure for younger collectors, which may lead to even more involvement in the coin hobby. It is not a coin I will acquire, since I do not follow ball sports...but that is just my preference. Cheers, RickO

A different style of coins... for a different type of collector generation.

    Not for me.

Wow. That is a nice surprise. None of mine were signed.
Now it will be a race to buy them all just to find #1 and get it certified ;)

    Mine was signed as well.

    How many were signed?

It does mention that some of them will be signed by them interact or but I cannot find how many.

I have not seen anything from the major grading services regarding certifying the COAs.

I'm also guessing if they work to do so once the Box is open that would be not possible. Retrospectively now that I have a signed certificate I'm thinking I should have sent it sealed to our host for grading but again I've not seen where they certify the certificates like they did with the enhanced reverse proof silver eagles.

@Raufus I think the mint website was updated later and says:
These products will include a limited quantity of hand signed and numbered Certificate of Authenticity (COA) by the Director of the Mint.

No sayin how many are gonna be signed. The colorized dollar and half dollar’s COAs all have a chance.

On eBay there are 2 currently for sale,
    199-$1,000
    58-$100

I don't believe there is much cross over appeal between coin collectors and NBA fans. Many coin collectors will buy this coin just as they do other US Mint products, because the Mint issues it.

I don't believe any noticeable number of NBA fans who aren't coin collectors will want or buy this coin; lower proportion and number than for the baseball coins. If the silver dollar is $100, that's also expensive for someone who isn't a collector. A non-collector can find a lot better uses for the money.

There are already dozens of first day issued labels with key basketball player's signatures. There is a group of people who seem to want all the labels. It does cater to a different group of customers for PCGS and the Mint, and keeps some people working. These are not anything I want to collect (except one for my commemorative set), but I can see the reasons for it.
