OFFICIAL Seated Liberty coins with CHOPMARKS Thread

We're all familiar with the U.S. Trade Dollar and the abundance of these coins that can be found with Chinese chopmarks, but there are other U.S. denominations, and a bunch of other countries who used the Seated Liberty design and are were used in the Chinese trade. In fact, the U.S. Seated Liberty design wasn't even the first.

Let's use this thread as a place to post Seated Liberty coins FROM ANY COUNTRY with Chinese Chopmarks. I think you'll be surprised how many designs out there feature both the design and the chopmarks!

Does anybody have any Seated halves with chopmarks pedigreed to the
    Irving Goodman Collection
    Superior Galleries May 27, 28 1996

I think the cataloguer stated Goodman had purchased the coins in Hong Kong during the 1960’s

I have only seen the text...don’t know if there were any images

Lot 985 Group of coins, etc.

Well if it's official then! Only Seated Halves for me, the other denominations just haven't become available enough for me to get an example.

I've never seen any images of the coins in question (not sure if the catalog contains any, I would doubt it), but QDB described a full inventory of the dates of the Seated Liberty hoard, totaling 169 pieces ranging from 1843-1895. Of these, only four were chopmarked, one of each of the following: 1843-P, 1846-P, 1863-S, and 1864-S. I did once own a nice, original chopmarked 1843-P, which is a particularly early date to find with chops and coincides with the description of one of the dates in the Goodman Collection, but it would be difficult to determine if they were the same coin.

@ChopmarkedTrades You should consider posting one of your nice non-U.S. seated coins with chops here.

Figured someone would post a chopmarked trade dollar by now. Here's a nice 74-CC graded MS63 by our hosts.

The only Irving Goodman coin I own is a chopmarked 960 Reis. Killer coin, but not a seated half so I'll save that one for another thread.

Still own the 43-P? Potentially a Goodman coin.

Here it is, and I think you're right that it could be a Goodman coin. Hard to say without pictures to match, but how many chopmarked 1843-P halves can there be out there?

    Characters on this one:

厷 (old variant of 肱)- gōng - upper arm; part of the arm

壽 (old variant of 寿)- shòu - long life, old age, age; life; birthday

Here's a fun one that I picked up on eBay a few months ago that needs to go in for grading. It'll probably come in as a 58, but has an outside chance at eking out a 61 or 62.

Cool thread! I have about a dozen chop marked Seated Halves, most are pretty beat up but that's OK. Most are S mints from the 1860s, as you would expect, with a few from the 1850s. Unfortunately, I don't have any pics to post. I also have a couple of Bust Halves from the 1830s with chop marks. So, you can see that there was a real demand at the time for a Trade Dollar to be used in trade with China.

Posted this one elsewhere recently, here's a special coin from the F.M. Rose collection, featured as a plate in his book on Chopmarks.

I have one seated liberty, but it's still raw. I planto submit it to PCGS.

I can add trade dollars, though!

    Nice trades guys!

Here's a French Indo-China Piastre, issued from 1885-95. The coin was intended to compete with various trade dollars from the Straits Settlements, India, Mexico and the United States. French Indochina was occupied by the Japanese in 1940. French attempts to reoccupy the area after World War Two were challenged by Ho Chi Minh and the Viet Minh, leading to French defeat and withdrawal in 1954. The colony was divided into Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.

Many elements of the imagery should be familiar to us, with Seated Liberty holding a fasces (full bands anyone?). The headdress resembles our Statue of Liberty, and the wheat stalks similar to our Trade Dollar. Instead of the ocean (US trade dollar) or the ocean and ship (British trade dollar) the designer chose to include a ship anchor. The reverse is also similar to other coin designs of the time. The designer and engraver did an excellent job on this one, the intricate detail of the face, hands and robe on this design see more realistic and detailed than the US trade dollar.

    One chopmark:

    古 - gǔ - ancient, old

In terms of surface preservation it is most likely a top 5 condition census example and one of the most original of one of the true rarities from that era. I have handled a lot of coins but that one is truly one of the treasures in our hobby for the seated series imho

Great pickup, part of a small mintage and an even smaller shipment sent abroad. Only know of one another chopmarked example, and that's currently unaccounted for.
