Package Missing - Last seen leaving Newark, NJ **UPDATE** In first post

As of 9 PM EST the package was scanned in Atlanta, GA

**Thank you to all those who responded. The stories of your own missing packages, many absent much longer than my own, filled me with hope and confidence that I would eventually receive the package. Now it looks like I'll be able to give words of encouragement to the next poster going through a similar experience.

Thanks again, you all rock!!**

I had a USPS package of 20 coins mailed from CAC in New Jersey to me in California via Medium Box Priority Mail in mid May 2020. It was last scanned by USPS in Newark, New Jersey on 16 May 2020, and since then. there has been no update.

I contacted USPS through a contact form on their website on 30 May 2020. The next day I received a phone call from my local post office asking a few follow-up questions. At the end of the call, they told me they would investigate the matter from the units in New Jersey throughout the following week.

The next day I got another call from my local post office, from a different USPS agent, saying that usually when a package goes 4 days without being scanned it raises a red flag. The red flag in this case he says is the package is probably lost. I’m not sure how easy it is to lose a package one foot by one foot in size. A letter I can understand.

A few days after that, I received an email from USPS asking me to fill out a survey, grading how well I thought the post office handled my case. You can imagine how that went. A day after that the tracking information no longer appeared on the USPS Informed Delivery app.

I also contacted the shipper, who filed a missing package claim on the package. So far, no news on their progress, though it has been less than a full week. Even though tracking info was deleted from the Informed Delivery app, I still have the tracking number. When I check the number there are still no updates on its movement.

I would appreciate it if any collectors or dealers (in the Newark or New York area or nationwide or online) would send me a PM if any of these coins come into their shop or if anyone notices they are being sold on-line.

Just a note that 18 of the 20 coins are colorfully toned Lincoln’s from my highly ranked PCGS Registry set (top 5) . Photos and certification numbers are provided below.

Thank you in advance for your help. Any other ideas on how to handle this situation would also be welcome.

Bob

    Ugh...

I will, of course, search for these and let you know if any come up. This sucks.

That's terrible news. I hope they somehow find the package and get it to you safely or catch whomever is responsible and insurance covers everything.

I had a package in a similar situation from amazon. After 10 days it showed no progress after leaving Nashville. Amazon refunded my money and called it lost. A week later it showed up on my door. I still don’t know why it happened and everyone including the post office called it lost.

All that to say that there is still hope. Hopefully it will work out for you.

Damn. That's so sad. It is hard to believe that happened. So sorry, Bob.

CAC insured it no doubt. I hope you get a fair settlement. Will it be challenging to get a fair shake on beautiful toned Lincolns?

:'( Man o man! :'( I feel so terrible for you. I just started a discussion on my coin just been received by our host. Saying that's half the battle. Making it safely there without the same problem you're experiencing. I'm so sorry dude. Hope everything turns out for the better? Those coins are so, so BEAUTIFUL too! :'(

Wow, that totally sucks! I truly hope the USPS ends up locating your package. I've had parcels go AWOL in the past for up to a couple of weeks, but they eventually were delivered.

Something like this happened to me once, but it was only a $15 coin that I bought. It finally showed up 11 MONTHS later. I messaged the seller on Ebay, for what it was worth, but they never replied.

They normally do. I received an email asking if they could send it priority since Registered has been even slower due to the pandemic.

Not that it means anything, but I just received my package that was 3 weeks late.

OMG, this hurts so much, Bob. I am so sorry you are going through this. :'(
This makes me so angry. I hope you end up with the package located.

Thanks for all the responses. So far I am still hopeful. I've talked to several people who have had similar occurrences with positive results ..........eventually. I felt as a precaution I would pass the photos around in case the coins show up in places they shouldn't.

@chesterb Thank you for mentioning NCIC. I did send them an email after reading your post. I filled out a report, but couldn't send it because the dates were in the wrong format.

I tried all of these and none worked..........the email was quicker

I am actually angry for you. Many of those Lincolns are not easily (if at all) replaceable! Your 20-D as been a favorite of mine over the last few months- so mesmerizing.

I received an email asking if they could send it priority since Registered has been even slower due to the pandemic.

I don't care how slow it is - I've always used Registered Mail and never had a problem. Also, I've been using Registered Mail the past couple of months and haven't noticed any change in delivery times (still 8 to 12 days).

It will certainly be Registered from here on.

you might want to include the grade after each cert number that accompanies each photo in the OP. Knowing the grade helps narrow down the search.

Wow. How very frustrating. A box of bullion is one thing, but unique beauties like this are entirely different. I think you'll most likely get them eventually.

  • BLUEJAYWAYBLUEJAYWAY Posts: 10,035 ✭✭✭✭✭

It would be an injustice if those beauties never resurface. I'm sure you would rather have the coins than any financial settlement. I know I would. Best of luck in their delivery/ recovery.

Hoping for the best outcome for you. Can't help thinking though if someone did steal your package, I'd be praying they'll see more than 53 cents in that box and have some numismatic sense to trying to sell them at their local B/M. Or better yet, the guy shows those coins to a friend with numismatic sense and that guy does the right thing.

Sorry about it but you might still receive the package later on. I have a package just like that for a month but it eventually showed up. Don’t lose hope yet. Hope you will receive it later.

Sorry to hear about the "lost" package, I have faith it will show up sometime soon, hoping for you it will show up

  • 1Mike11Mike1 Posts: 4,427 ✭✭✭✭✭

I hope its just a glitch in the system and they show up in the mail. It will be impossible to replace some of those. If someone does have them it will be impossible not to recognize them if they try to sell them. I'll let you know if I see any of them online.

Don't loose hope as there's huge delays on some Priority and Next Day shipments right now with the virus. Some USPS hubs in cities are hit harder then others. There's also shortages of airplanes they can slip the parcels on. I had a USPS Priority parcel missing in action for 33 days. I opened 2 cases and a insurance claim and it was delivered after all. It just resurfaced after being off the radar screen tracking wise for 29 days.

Sorry to hear of your problem.... One of my son-in-laws works for the Post Office (a carrier and in house worker), and he told me that because of the pandemic, the air carriers are very limited... So mail/packages are delayed and or routed circuitously. There are many issues right now.... Do not lose hope, based on what he told me, you may yet get your coins. Cheers, RickO

Glancing at the coins in question I once owned a 45-S Washie over a decade ago that was almost toned the same.

I had a medal I bought from Canada on April 15th and it just came last Saturday June 6th. The last tracking before that was no update since April 26th. It might show up.

@robec So sorry for your troubles. Such beautiful coins. Mostly irreplaceable, I would imagine. Here's hoping you get them all back.

I admire you for having such a great attitude. Hopefully your coins will show up soon. I’ve noticed my mail service at home and work (California) has been very erratic. I’m not getting mail delivery everyday and when I do it’s sometimes as late as 6:00 PM. Between the pandemic and the protests the USPS has their hands full.

  • JimTylerJimTyler Posts: 3,727 ✭✭✭✭✭

They’re not scanning like they use to. One went from accepted to out for delivery today. Two others marked accepted now nothing else. One is cheap. One has me throwing out underwear.

That 20-D is outstanding. It looks like a bronze bust sculpture.
Sorry to hear they are in limbo somewhere, I'd be very stressed in your shoes. CAC uses private shipping insurance right? So they wouldn't have a high postage or insured amount on the package by usps if tat's the case.

Call the PO where it was last seen and ask them to look for it since they probably knew where the next stop would be.
