The best way to handle is by lottery. A simple set of rules, or qualifications, could be employed-but not necessary. Something like "US Mint Account holders for more than 3 years are eligible for the first 15 mins, open season afterwards. Or some sort of a VIP club based on years having an active account can buy first - sort of like a preview.
I like this, and it seems fair to me. I had been buying coins from the Mint for over 30 years and have gotten shut out lately by the bots. This is not the right way to treat a loyal customer.
I've got news for you, there are a LOT of long-term flippers. There are also thousands of long-time Mint account holders who hardly ever buy anything.
Everyone who proposes a solution, proposes one that they think favors themselves. At the same time, that will create all kinds of unhappy people who aren't favored by the terms of your lottery - including many new non-flipping collectors.
The Mint also has 500,000 accounts. You may well entice people to buy to flip by letting them in the door for an item they wouldn't normally buy and who don't want to play the game we've been playing.
[Disclaimer: I've been buying from the Mint for going on 25 years. I flip 98% of everything I buy from them. I have 3 active buying accounts that are at least 4 years old and a network of buyers who have accounts that are 4 or 5 years old. Bring on the lottery.]
I am a collector. In the 30+ years I have been buying from the Mint, I have never flipped a coin. Not even one. I collect them rather than use them as a source of income. I don’t care if it’s a lottery or whatever, but it would sure be nice if the Mint were to come up with a way to buy coins for those of us who treat numismatics as a hobby rather than a job.

MetroD...are you a Detroit native? Also, you have been very helpful to us un-initiated to help make submissions for grading much more easy. I assume you work for PCGS.
Yes sir. Still live in the area.
Do not work for PCGS. Had a lot of trouble with my first few PCGS submissions, so I immersed myself in their site in an attempt to prevent future issues.
Thanks for asking. I sincerely hope that your AGE comes back a 70.
For dealers utilizing crowd sourcing makes sense as one man one coin is not going to give them the inventory necessary and they need to put food on the table, so I get it. They pay people to increase their odds, it’s like buying multiple lottery tickets. The multiple accounts and bots etc...another animal entirely if used to circumvent the household limit.

Interesting responses. Good idea at first, just not the desired results for sure. I think it would also be devastating if they tried to fix this mess by minting another batch of these. Not sure if that is possible or not but seems like the 75,000 mintage ASE in the congratulation set a few years back ended up with a higher mintage made later.
Is it really a mess. I mean some got it and some didn’t. That’s what happens when they only make 1,945. Maybe we as collectors need to stop worrying about having every last one of a set.
They better not mint more. The 2017 congratulations set was different in that that was a product limit of 75,000. They then had the same coin in the special proof set later that year. This was listed as a product limit and mintage limit of 1,945. People have been asking for more to be made all the way back to the 2001 Buffalo commemoratives. And I don’t think the mint has ever done that.

$60k. WOW !!!
You probably already know this, but just in case ...
Even if you pay for extra insurance, 'Express Mail' has an indemnity limit of $15.00 on "bullion". This $15.00 limit does not exist for 'registered mail'.

What I'd wonder is how they distinguish between bullion and "collector" coins? If a package with these were lost I'd submit that these are collector coins, not bullion.
How great would it be if the mint would just leave the coin up for 5 minutes and let the people who still have it in their cart actually proceed to have it processed. Just stop with the 10 second window its like they are catering to the 5 coins in 10 seconds BOTS . I wish they would give us a secret link to just let us purchase this coin and clear our carts out
OK my daily rant see you all tomorrow at lets take a guess 730 EST or 745 EST

There are probably more people that have it available in their carts than number of coins available by many times over so it would still be gone in a second.
My guess is 7:45. Seems to be the new release time for the past few days.

Based on the premium, I concur.
That said, I have seen a couple of threads here specific to this issue. The default position of the USPS seems to be that every 'lost/damaged' gold coin is bullion. If you disagree, you have to 'fight' with them about it.

I assume just means they can’t take any credit card info, for like payment changes or updates. And also not doing phone orders right now. Probably working from home so I’d assume for security reasons.
I haven’t placed a phone order for probably 15 years. Can someone explain to me the preference for phone ordering with the mint some here have. I’ve seen a couple complaints about it, on limited releases is it a better way to go?

Incredible. You pay for the insurance, they're clearly not bullion and, if THEY loose it you have to fight them. Good lord.

I don't know. It was right before I took a hiatus for a couple months. But it is still USPS who decides the appeal, unless you took them to court. [Which might be worth it for $60k but not for $1k.]
