Wow Just wow

I still go through my fav dealers sites looking at coins and came across don Rinkor’s site and there is an almost complete top pop trade variety set that has hit the market there.

Amazing highlights like
UNC 76 2/2, 77 DDO, 78CC, 75CC 1/2, 76 2/2 Large S, 76s RPD, 77s RPD

75p 1/1, the finest known 76s DDO, 78s DDR 801

Where was that set my whole life when I was still active :| just amazing to roll through, some rare stuff there

Wow! what a set. I wonder who the collector was who assembled that set! A sweet 78cc in vf30 OGH. and the 76-s DDO . My goodness.

The Rinkor site isn't very compatible with antivirus programs, hasn't been for a while. Not sure why.

Extraordinary collection, the 76-P 2/2 in 61 is very nice.

Just perused the set on Rinkor's site. What an accumulation! Interesting, though, that for such an all-encompassing set, I only found one example of the 1.2mm "Wide CC", the 1876. I would have expected the 73 and 74 for sure...

it looks like they were collecting mostly the minor variety set as PCGS defines it.

A couple of these are subtlety very rare. The 76 with period after FINE (non broken serifs in peripheral lettering). The 75 I/I, 76 II/II, the 76 I/I normal mintmark, to name a few.

I take it back, Looks like they contain many many details, like blunt R and others.

Yes, that's how I saw it, too. The set has just about every variety, both major and minor...

WOW! Would love to be able to see these coins in person. A number of these rarities I have never seen in such a high grade before. A beautiful collection.

    How very interesting.

I will be in Santa Rosa next Monday or Tuesday for some court business. After I finish with business I will consider stopping by the dealer's shop to snoop and hopefully look at this collection.

    Eye Candy!!!!!

It has to be trader73 form the registry. He had UNC 76cc wide and a 74cc wide.

He never found the 73 or 75

Yes, that is Trader1873. I purchased a couple of his high grade chopmarked Trade Dollars a couple of years ago. It appears he is now selling off his collection of non-chopmarked Trades. It is a wonderful collection, I hope these go to good homes.

I always wonder if a whole set hitting the market at the same time (especially in specialized areas like die varieties or transitional designs) is a good thing. Maybe not in this scenario where it is on someone's website, but definitely in an auction.
Consider, for example, an esoteric area of the hobby (not necessarily trade dollars.) Maybe 1-4 collectors actively trying to "have them all." Would it be better to spread the collection sale out over several months, or a year or two, in order to give those interested time to fund such an endeavor?
Guess it really depends on the budget of those collecting and the value they place on the collection.
Someone here did tell me once that the only thing scarcer than Trade Dollar varieties... were the people who collect them. This still true?

Great point and something I thought long and hard about myself when I sold my set.

I contacted the 3-4 collectors who snapped up the cream, put a few on hold. Then published to the larger community and then almost predictably was left with the avg coins and stranger stuff that was in the set. I then walked the coins at a show and sold 75% of that and then put the rest on great collections. The whole process took me 4 months or so and I was happy with the results (even with more losers than winners) but my target was % of realistic value and not influenced by what I paid.

I would like to reinforce that I did the best on my best coins I stretched for. The old rule if you are willing to stretch others might be too, played out true.

The concern about selling too many specialty pieces at once seems a real one to me too. On one hand, you want to generate buzz for the collection; on the other hand, buzz won't necessarily translate into bidder activity. It depends on the series, and with the selling venue. I think the seller has controlled his downside by listing them in a retail site as opposed to an unreserved auction.

What surprises me most is that there is a major trade dollar variety set that does not come from someone on this board! I got the sense that most of the community hung out here. Course it could be someone just keeping quiet. In any case it’s very cool. I love seeing specialized variety sets like these.

Although it does not come from someone who regularly posts on this board, I think that most of the Trade Dollar guys here knew of the set. What we may not have known about, or at least I didn't, was the breadth and depth of the collection and the overall quality.

Any comments on why none of these Trade Dollars are selling. Are they priced to high or is the market that thin or weak? Lack of CAC sticker.

  • CryptoCrypto Posts: 3,852 ✭✭✭✭✭

They are priced a bit strong in a channel that will slow walk them to a bunch of shows and let retail buyers walk by the case before repricing. That said a bunch have sold

  • MilkmanDanMilkmanDan Posts: 3,761 ✭✭✭✭✭

The owner doesn’t believe in CAC, and having seen the collection in hand, the large majority are very high end.

  • willywilly Posts: 359 ✭✭✭✭✭

I was just curious I bought one when they were first posted for my 7070 set and it was very nice for the grade. The price was strong but not ridiculous. Not that familiar with the series and I figured that none of the coins had been sent to CAC as there where zero with a sticker.
