    Congratulations.

That's why we always say to send them in. Impossible to be definitive from a photo. But I will say that I never would have bought them if the color in the photos was accurate. They just don't look right. But, sometimes the long shot comes in.

    Congrats.

    Congrats to you @CoinNovice !

I don't think I've commented on this thread.

I originally was quite sure the Hawaiian was fake.
Then @Ikeigwin did a great service by making one of those overlays.
I thought for sure that would be the nail in the coffin but was amazed how the graded one matched yours so closely.
That overlay spoke volumes to me.
I know many good fakes come from using original coins so I was paralyzed and could not defend any position.

Thank you for following through for the benefit of all.

Someone mentioned this thread to me tonight....I hadn't seen it before.

Reading page 1, and then page 5, and not the ones in between, I will definitely add a "congratulations to you!", to the OP.
If one feels confident, and one has the "discretionary" funds for the buy, then doing what you did can be fun and potentially rewarding.

It's great that some folks on this site want to be helpful. It's sad when some are so stuck on themselves that they not only give an opinion, but they then get snarky and/or rude when someone doesn't bow down to them or their opinions.

From the original photos, I wouldn't have purchased them at full value as slabbable with no issues type of thing...but, considering you weren't doing it that way, and you paid something much more nominal, you did it the right way and got it all ok. The photos did make me think cleaned, and PCGS agreed, so I feel ok with my eyesight now, and glad you sent them in so you know you had a right to be confident that they were real and authentic.

Stick around, learn who has knowledge to share, and learn who has some knowledge but they feel more like arguing or belittling others. Then, do what YOU do, and enjoy yourself :)

It's sad, but this is the exact reason I don't visit the boards much anymore.

Congrats on those commems !!! Well worth it...

I guess I'll be sending in my 1843 C quarter eagle ($2 1/2) gold piece for submission soon, since I took a gamble and paid about $100 over melt for it on the bay.

And Paul, it's a main reason I don't either...and, even when I do visit, I have refrained from a lot of the posting and trying to help because of people like I was talking about. Just not worth it.

    WTG! We're happy for you.

Sadly, judgments from pictures are only as good as the images themselves. I think that was problem from the beginning and it was all downhill.

I'm just wondering how many times people have contacted eBay to say a listing has a fake coin in it, and eBay removes the listing, when the coin is really authentic. Many images on eBay really aren't top notch either.

I'll bet that if the OP's coins were listed raw on eBay more than one person would have contacted eBay to say the coins are not authentic and eBay would have removed the listing. Or am I incorrect and eBay really investigates a listing when it is called fake.

... checks to see if posted earlier... no. Good ...

    (Gets on very high horse)

Authenticating from a picture can be difficult let alone grading. You must have the coin in hand and even then some fakes are tough. Let this be a lesson to many.

    Lol

Great thread. Most amusing. But 99 times out of a 100 this forum is normally spot on.

I am also relatively new to the forum. I normally hang at Coin Talk. So welcome @CoinNovice
I finally read the entire thread. Congratulations. I have seen so many newbies proclaim their coin is authentic, mint error, etc... even though told otherwise by very knowledgeable members (Coin Talk). Then say they'll send the coin in for grading, never to be seen again. Kudos to you for hanging in there, when many would have just gave up. You have shown that judging coins by pics only, can be very misleading. Pictures can hide flaws and can be very deceiving to even knowledgeable collectors.
Thank you, and welcome home. 👑

PS; I was thinking they were both fake, also. My Bad.

I may not know what I'm doing most of the time, but I'm Damn good at it. 😇 😈

I suspect we are witnessing a "lesson being learned".

True. Though it would be which ever way the result was.

I was among those guessing something would be fake, but could not tell enough from photos so I didn't post.

    Great result @CoinNovice.

By the way, we all now LOVE that swapmeet. Be sure to tell us where it is so we can scoop up the bargains before you do. >:)

I am ecstatic for the OP and give him a lot of credit for submitting the coins and committing o posting the results either way.

However...based on some of the responses from newer members I fear for some people the wrong message has been learned.

This whole episode does not mean that the very experienced and expert members here should be routinely ignored, and it does not mean that damaged coins are real errors (someone referenced newbies and their supposed error coins).

P.S. - counterfeits and unscrupulous sellers are still out there!

Color me surprised. I guess the Hawaiian was banged up and cleaned just enough to make the lettering look kind of sloppy. Congratulations on getting them authenticated. As Han Solo said, however, don't get cocky. I think you dodged a bullet here.

Okkkk...the self congratulating may be in order but I hope you learned a lesson as well. They may be genuine (you got lucky) but they’re also severely cleaned and unnatural in appearance. If you weren’t aware of that in the first place, do take note.

I am aware. But I never argued they were mint state. I just argued they were genuine, call them damaged, polished, whatever you want .I argued that they were genuine.
    Is it really that bad?
Why is it that the little knowledge I had to pick them out as authentic, labeled as luck?

because the majority of the time people that aren't regular posters here and post coins like you posted, they invariably end up being counterfeit, especially when purchased in venues such as mentioned; including times when they send the coins in and pay a lil tuition to find out. so it may not seem like luck from your end but from a part of this community, it can seem that way. your pictures did make it a bit challenging and some should have adjusted their comments as such. ultimately, 99% of the people were trying to look out for you.

i cannot comment about the "luck" thing as i know nothing about your experience but not having a lot of knowledge in numismatic forgery detection and purchasing in venues like you did, you will get nailed eventually. it would help for you to appreciate the hundreds of years of cumulative experience on these boards. although, we do get some things wrong from time to time and i am, as i am sure many others are here, happy to be wrong for a change! :)

keep posting and contributing and i'm sure we'll all learn a few things and have some good times. ;)
