Would US Consider Minting Commemorative High Relief Silver Peace Dollar in 2021??

I wish the US Mint would consider minting a High Relief Commemorative Silver Peace Dollar in 2021 to celebrate the 100th Anniversary Year of that classic design being implemented.

    I doubt it.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

The difficulty is doing it in silver. They can follow the same procedure as 2016 gold fractions, but the "dollar" would be awfully small if made in 0.999 gold or even 0.900 alloy.

A 0.700 gold alloy with the proper elements added would be just sufficient to allow use of the 1921 high relief model at almost the correct diameter - but, that would violate the law regarding billion pieces. (Maybe it could be made in anodized, gold-colored titanium? Kind of "gold pressed titanium" ... ;) )

Apparently the USMint did a survey about 6 months ago. From another forum:

I was sent a survey by the US Mint and they asked about the likelihood that I would purchase a 1oz Morgan and Peace Dollar commemorative "Medal" if issued in 2021. They also asked if a mintage of 75,000 or 100,000 would be more appealing and if a "proof" or "high relief" finish would be better. The survey also suggested a price point somewhere in between $40 and $45.

The above was not my post. Regardless, it gives me hope that the Mint will do something in silver.

I have wondered that for some time. I would be a buyer for sure.

I'd love to see a 1 oz gold coin if they could do it in high relief and with the artist's intended level of detail. I don't think a CNC cartoon version would be true to the feel of the artist's work.

I also doubt it if only because of the glacial pace of Congress. One that I definitely would purchase though.

If the mint struck a high relief Peace Dollar with the date 2021 or with the dual dates "1921-2021" I would certainly buy one. I always liked the Peace Dollar design a lot more than the Morgan Dollar design.

    A November 2018 article about a possible 2021 medal.

“The U.S. Mint is also pursuing product development for a Morgan and Peace silver medal for 2021 and issuance of an intaglio-engraved presidential print coupled with silver Presidential medals as a joint product between the Mint and the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.”

That is running VERY close to sacrilege. ;)

Why would it be difficult in silver? The Mint has struck other hi-relief 1 ounce silver medals. AND Dan Carr has done a beautiful job with his High Relief Peace Dollar series. They are near perfection, albeit he makes far fewer than the Mint would. He will most certainly strike them in 2021, but may run afoul if the Mint is doing the same issue.

The legislation is encouraging. Glad to see Peace Dollars included as well. No mention of a "medal", sounds like they will be true silver legal tender dollars (yes!). A CC Morgan is a bit odd though being that none were struck at CC in 1921.

I buy mine from Dan Carr and happy to have them. Don’t care if it’s US mint.

If it happens - either the Morgan or Peace or both - I'd be in. Wouldn't these be great ? A set with High Relief of both ?
    Oh, sorry....did I just jinx it ?

If they make these coins, I hope they are high quality and true to the originals. The Old San Francisco Morgan reverse was a tepid and disappointing effort.

The mint could make medals on their own, existing, authority. To make an actual coin would require an act of congress.

The Bill in Congress authorizes a REAL coin not a counterfeit.

Not only may it happen, but we may also get a CC Morgan...

And that's why the bill was introduced in the House.

I'd like to see the wording of the text of the law, which hasn't been published yet.

The Carson City Mint is now a museum and displays some original minting equipment including functional presses. It would be really neat if they could strike several thousand 2021-CC Morgan dollars there. I would definitely buy a few.
