This is just an amazing example of a CAR 8 Reales - one of the best I have seen in hand. I estimate MS63, but would love to hear your thoughts - the eye appeal is amazing for the type. Found it in a small but very nice collection of world coins in the UK. Could not be happier

Where in the UK? I lived there for a few years recently and know most of the shops in the north and London.

Fantastic pickup @Senator32! Wish the coin could talk and tell us where it’s been hiding these many many years.

    Nice coin.

Nice strike and lustre. That toning is not that old, but should not pose any issues with PCGS. I hope they don't ding you for that scratch, though.

It shouldn't grade with that scratch.

Do you really think that scratch is enough to details it? I don't. Looks like a normal scratch you would see on a MS63 Morgan etc. It is not very deep and has toned over too. Guess we will see, but it didn't strike me as a non-grade issue.

I love the coin. I won't even pretend to guess what PCGS or anyone else would say.
It shouldn't grade was just my opinion.
I guess I am just old fashioned.
That scratch didn't come from the mint.
If it were on a well circulated coin I might could see it.

I can see that. And I totally expect them to dock a few points for it...imo it would be a 65 without that. Would just be a shame if it ended up in a details slab. Fingers crossed it doesn't.

Good thing it was over the internet....way to close to Newcastle, you wouldn't have been able to understand a word they said in person.

It's a gamble. And odds are not great with a scratch like that. But you might end up taking a grade hit instead. The question is - will your appreciation of it change if it comes back in a Details holder?

If he hates it, I'd happily take it off his hands, lol.

Honestly a bit yes - but it is so nice I would just put it in my world crown Dansco if this occurred. Mainly I would be annoyed that my eye was wrong and disappointed that one of the very best I have seen of this type would be relegated to a slab of death. In hand I just don't think it has the "damaged" look that usually comes along with a details coin...just looks like a contact mark - just expect them to knock off a few points for the imperfection. We will see as this is PCGS bound in the next month or so. Fingers crossed.

Before TPG likely few people would have been bothered by this coin. I think the Sun's face and the foliage are so perfect that the old scratch bothers me little.

Still a great coin. I bet there was a noticeable uptick in google search "Hartlepool coin shops" in the last day or two!

I agree with some others that this should get a details grade with that scratch. Ive seen less get details
