@Dimeman Durant already has a 30M player option for the 2019-20 season if he decides he wants to stay in GS for next season and rehab. I think the Warriors GM would gladly sign him to a long term deal regardless of the injury as would a few other teams just to get him to their franchise.
if the choice comes down to only being able to keep 2 out of 3 when the group is Draymond Green, Klay Thompson and Kevin Durant I think the wisest, most prudent thing is to allow Durant to go and keep the other two.

If they all want to play for GS they will work it out.
KD & Klay are free agents this offseason and Green next offseason. All three are more than likely going to get 30M+/yr contracts to go along with Curry's 40/43/45M salaries over the next three years. Say KD,Klay & Green get their 30M deals from GS then for the 2020-21 season those 4 players would account for at least 133M alone.
The expected salary cap and luxury tax totals for that season will be 118M salary cap & 143M luxury tax. Those 4 contracts alone could put the Warriors at the luxury tax line and that doesn't count for the remainder of the roster.
Maybe the GS owners value making less profit if it keeps winning them championships but I don't think they'd want to go into every season knowing that their luxury tax bill will be huge. We've seen from this playoff run alone that injuries could derail a team's title chances real fast. They've done well paying everyone to this point but paying out four max contracts would be extremely difficult.
Odds on KD exercising his option and collecting $31.5m from GS while he rehabs next year? It's probably the smart move for him and then go FA next year once he's (hopefully) healthy again.
I think that multiple teams would be willing to sign him next month even with this injury. The Knicks,Nets & Clippers would all do anything to get that first star player if it leads to getting the second star as well.
Depending on a variety of factors, the GS roster for next season will be interesting to watch being assembled, especially if GS wins the next two games of the finals and threepeats.
If Durant leaves, Thompson signs a long term deal and Green gives assurances that he will sing long term the following year, I would not be surprised to see Cousins decide to return to GS on a 1 year minimum deal. He could then work the entire off season on his health and conditioning. If he suffers not more injuries in the next two games and gets into top shape for the 2019-2020 season I could see him playing at his former All Star level next season. After returning to All Star form he could then test the market for a long term max deal. The benefit would be that he could play a full season with full health on a team where he does not have to be the #1 guy; and he could play in the finals a second season in a row.

Kinda crazy someone would pay him $40+m to sit on the bench next year. I didn't realize any team was that desperate.

The Knicks definitely are that desperate. They could realistically sign KD & Kyrie then trade for Anthony Davis using a bunch of their young players along with the #4 pick. If KD were to be the first domino the rest gets much easier. NY has been horrible for years with plenty of wasted salary so throwing away 30M for one season shouldn't be to bad.
edit: also if KD doesn't jump ship this offseason the team(s) on his potential landing list might not have the cap a year from now to sign him. I've read NY is his top spot and if they do a deal for AD this offseason then they likely don't have the pieces to offer in a sign & trade next offseason if that is his plan.
The Knicks have been a terribly run franchise for a long time, under the ownership of James Dolan.
I do not see it being a foregone conclusion that the Knicks will compete for a title simply if the team is successful in signing Kevin Durant and maybe one or two other top players.
I think Kevin will have enough of a time dealing with mental/physical rehab. That when that is behind him, he will not want to go to a franchise to help them rehab. Stay with GS.
Successful transactions:Tookybandit. "Everyone is equal, some are more equal than others".
Horrible news about Klay's injury. Hopefully GS still pays him a max contract,he's worth every penny. I think he's the most underrated player in the NBA and could easily average 30 a night as the #1option.
Congrats to the Raptors. They played very well and TOOK the crown from GS.
As for GS, what can you say? GS suffered a never ending string of injuries throughout the playoffs and never quit. They showed heart and competitive fire. Kudos to them.
Here's an article that breaks down what would happen if GS hands Max contracts to KD,Klay & Green over the next year: https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/warriors-offseason-breakdown-how-kevin-durant-leaving-could-save-1-billion-why-demarcus-cousins-could-be-back/ About that huge tax bill This is wild, but here's the deal. Per ESPN, the Warriors could become the first team to field four max-contract players with Stephen Curry already one, Thompson and Durant potentially two and three this summer, and Draymond Green up for his own max contract next summer. If they sign all those guys, then re-up Looney at roughly $15 million over three years, even if they fill out the rest of the roster with minimum-salary players and draft picks, their total bill in salary and taxes with be $1.6 billion over the next four years.
would it be unreasonable for a Team such as the Knicks to sign Durant to a contract, let's say four years, where it is back loaded?? the first year, in which he wouldn't play, would be a token salary and he could then rehab the entire season to come back the next year 100%.
or are these NBA players too selfish to the point where they feel they should sign and then sit for the max salary??
