There isn't enough NBA or Foreign teams for all the Want to Be Pros that play on College teams. These players need to realize the importance of getting an education while they are in college. Wonder how many players regret that they didn't actually study when they were in school and get something with the free education that they were given.

you don't need to go to college to work at wendys slinging fries or run around an amazon warehouse

Just thought I’d inject some actual unbiased and accurate history in the thread for those interested.
The Civil War, like every war ever fought, was about money. Slaves, being property at the time, are money. The raw goods (cotton, rice, sugar) are money. The products they become are money. The Northern factories, the future backbone of the US economy, needed to get these raw goods for less money. And Lincoln, who came from no money, was tasked with settling these issues. The South wanted the goods produced there to go to Europe (which they’d already been doing for 100 years) and where the South got paid considerably more for them. Lincoln wanted these raw materials sent North to grow the Northern and overall US economy.
Noteworthy is Lincoln was not even listed on the ballot for President in several Southern states. Thanks to the Lincoln Douglas debates, he’d earned a reputation as an abolitionist (which he was not). His election spurred on South Carolina’s seccession, something they were mulling 30 years earlier until President Andrew Jackson sent a private note to the then governor, assuring him that Old Hickory would personally hang him from the first tree he could find if talk of secession continued. Needless to say, it stopped all secessionist talk for some time
The term ‘Border States’ refers to the states that owned slaves and remained loyal to the union. They’re important because Lincoln could not and would not alienate those states. Which is why it so funny when people refer to the Emancipation Proclamation as a seminal moment. It was actually just clever politicking by a less than Honest Abe; contrary to the four scores of misinformation in this thread, the Emancipation Proclamation ‘freed only those slaves within the states that are in rebellion.’ It DID NOT outlaw or prohibit slavery in anyway, it simply (and on paper only) freed ALL CONFEDERATE SLAVES. Chances are those slaves actually impacted had no idea it was issued or that they were free. And real actual freedom and the ending of slavery only came via a couple of constitutional amendments after the war. Noteworthy is that we were (basically) the last civilized nation on earth to formally ban slavery (at the time)...
Lastly, Lincoln TRAMPLED all over the constitution in the fullfillment of his most important presidential responsibility - the process of defending said document. An irony that is both wonderful and terrible all at once.

I do disagree with your assessment of "every war ever fought, was about money." That is definitely not accurate. Most if not all wars are fought over cultural differences.
If a society likes another society and doesn't fear them trying to take assets or land, or conquer their society, they will not go to war with the other society over money. If a society hates another society, then money may be a pretense for war, but it is the hate that actually leads to war.
It gets a bit more complex in this modern world with multiple alliances of different cultures, but my basic premise stated still stands as accurate.

Since I assume, perhaps errantly, that these ‘cultural differences’ to which you refer are largely religious, we’re probably not in any disagreement. And I will tread lightly.
Religion is a very old, very important and very tax exempt business. Regardless of which faith you subscribe to, they all have the same core belief - love God and treat each other kindly. In every holy book, it is the same. Books are sold. Churches collect. Money given for services rendered. They provide morality, organize charity and create a sense community amongst the likeminded. And it, like everything else, needs money.
That’s where corruption enters and it can happen wherever there’s large sums of money involved. Zealotry begins and the message has already been corrupted. Why? Because people rely on other people to read it and tell them what it says rather than read it for themselves.
People like to point to the Crusades as a ‘Holy War’ between Christians and Muslims because those were the religions of the armies when in reality, the Holy Land was the DisneyWorld of its day where the rich would go once in their lifetime and buy souvenirs. Who could go where, when and why is still being fought over today, still selling the birthplace of your savior!
Now, I am religious and I do believe in God and the goodness of man but I acknowledge that man also comes with equal helpings of hubris and stupidity to match his goodnesss. We combat the latter two through self determination, reading for your own information (and development) and actively trying to be good and decent all the time.
Since we will all stumble AND we all need to hold each other accountable for our words, actions and behaviors as part of the human condition, we should try to remember that those on the ground need picking up any not kicking as we would hope when we are the ones on the ground.

Good post. I could nitpick a few points a little bit, but overall well stated.
Yes, by cultural differences that includes religion, but it can also include any number of factors including language, etc. I don't think it's a coincidence that our closest allies in the world today are English speaking countries, including a country such as Israel where almost everyone there can speak English.

If you mean we’re close with other countries that were also once under British rule (or still are), sure. The same Britain, by the way, who used its army and navy to ‘open global trade’ which is fancy historical terms for ‘sailed their armed ships, soldiers and ambassadors into harbors across the globe and said you can either trade with us on our terms or we can kill you all and take what we want. Remember, we’re good and decent folk so you can pick whichever you like.’ Not one to be outdone, here’s the how the US Commodore Matthew Perry opened Japan to trade in 1853:
You got it! Harbor full of warriors.
Now imagine when The Queen and their King to be Prince get together after WWI? What did they do? Stuck THE BILL with Germany and left them in ruins. Germany didn’t want to pay the whole the bill and couldn’t rebuild with no money. Germany decides we’re not paying, we’re taking and bang! THE SECOND WORLD WAR. Only no one wants to fight until? Hey, that’s my stuff your after now! My ships your sinking with my cargo! Oh, it’s so on! That’s...
...MY money we’re talking about.
US switches to a wartime ECONOMY (there’s that word again), the government pays every factor to make stuff for the war, we destroy Germany (and their factories, first and foremost) and set the terms of peace slightly differently. YOU will pay US to rebuild. We will take other economic perks as well.
Which brings us to the Nation State of Israel. Israel is a country of British and American invention - they literally drew lines on a map after World War II and said ‘new country’ and wouldn’t you know it by some crazy stroke of luck, one of the holiest cities in history just happened to fall in between those lines! Crazy, huh? Was it Caesar or Alexander who said ‘To the victor, go the spoils’ and boy was that some get! Arguably the greatest and most valuable piece of land on the Mediterranean and home to the Holy Land for three major world religions. Still think it’s not all about money?
While I’m not trying to make a direct comparison (I so am), about 20 years later Walt Disney would make a similar landgrab in 1970s Florida to create his cathedral dedicated to a cartoon mouse where folks the world over could come, worship and spend.
Therefore, the chances of Isreal being populated by the Bushmen of the Kalahari with their own language and customs seemed improbable, at best.

just to be clear these are not football players kneeling. Its college basketball so no one is ever going to see it ...... College basketball ........... college .......................... not real basketball .
I will say I'm glad they put a stop to all the kneeling in the penn state showers that was actually a crime
And I should also be clear - I’m not pushing an agenda and I am registered Independent since 18 years of age. I love history, economics, God and my fellow man. Broker, teacher, coach, preacher, civil servant and civil defendant all in one though age dependent. When I was in college, three different department heads sought me out to be their protege (economics, philosophy and history - go figure) but I was running with Jack, Jim and Bud and too immature to realize what a compliment and honor was being offered to me when I turned them down to go consume drugs and alcohol with my friends.
I also been told (often) that I should write. I am trying to embrace it but I honestly can’t imagine many people being interested in the ramblings of a nobody.
And quite obviously, I like baseball cards, too.

If you think creating the nation of Israel after six million innocent Jews were murdered by the Nazis, and countless more in countless persecutions throughout history, that it was about the money, especially when there was no oil there, then sorry to inform you that you are woefully ignorant about Israel.
The Jewish people thru incredible hard work and financial support from other Jews and friends around the world, made Israel into the country which today has some of the most valuable real estate in the world. Before then, the area was basically a near worthless desert.
I’m still waiting on Keets to answer my question about the families of Slain Military and LE and how he would tell them it’s ok to disrespect the flag, since he won’t answer maybe you will
I did answer by saying that "kneeling with bowed head is a sign of reverence" when I grew up and it still is today, maybe it means something different to you. the point of contention isn't the act, it is the choice of venue. it is no different than Sports Teams or Individual Athletes deciding not to visit the White House when they are invited. we hear nothing about that.
while I wouldn't choose to do the former I would most definitely not currently do the latter under any circumstances.
I would tell families of Slain Military and LE that by all means it is never OK to disrespect the US Flag(yes, the same Flag dislayed proudly in my sig-line). I would then explain to them that the protesters come from a different life perspective and have different life experiences, that is what motivates them to act accordingly. I would also explain that I don't expect them to understand.
What the human race needs is a real life "Independence Day" where all of humanity must unite and work together to avoid extinction due to a global invasion by Aliens whose goal is to consume all resources present on the planet, kill all life on the planet and move on to the next world.
Have mankind be under this kind of external threat for the next 1,000 years (allowing for those presently occupying earth, with their prejudices, etc., to pass on, leaving alive humans whose only life experience is "humans" vs. "aliens" and who do not care about the politics of division), remove the threat and then see if humanity can get along with each other.

Your basic knowledge of Civil War history seems pretty good.

The only problem is if an intelligent life form is advanced enough for interstellar travel and visits the earth with bad intentions, we would have absolutely no chance to stop them.
It wouldn't be like science fiction books or movies where human beings win. We wouldn't.
@keets said: I’m still waiting on Keets to answer my question about the families of Slain Military and LE and how he would tell them it’s ok to disrespect the flag, since he won’t answer maybe you will
I did answer by saying that "kneeling with bowed head is a sign of reverence" when I grew up and it still is today, maybe it means something different to you. the point of contention isn't the act, it is the choice of venue. it is no different than Sports Teams or Individual Athletes deciding not to visit the White House when they are invited. we hear nothing about that.
while I wouldn't choose to do the former I would most definitely not currently do the latter under any circumstances.
If humanity cannot win a war against advanced aliens who seek to destroy us we can at least come together in the same fox hole and fight to the end as one.

We haven't even sent a human to another planet yet, let alone interstellar travel. These aliens would have technology so advanced, that we haven't yet even imagined it.
Frankly they wouldn't even need to visit our planet to conquer us. They could just redirect a number of large meteors or whatever to land in the oceans and the massive tidal waves would wipe out most humans on the planet one way or the other.
Then they could just come down, take what resources they need, which would likely be mainly mineral resources, and be on their merry way.

Independence Day a very entertaining movie. And I'm sure if it was real life that Jeff Goldblum could have hacked into an alien computer with an alien language as easily as he did. That Will Smith could fly an alien spacecraft to perfection and successfully maneuver it around inside the alien mother spaceship.
Actually the movie with Bruce Willis and the asteroid was somewhat believable.
My opinion is that we will never see aliens from outer space come here, and they have never been here...for a multitude of reasons. However an event such as an asteroid is absolutely possible, likely not in our lifetime, but sometime in the future. NASA and the military have game planned for that possible event.
Frankly, if that asteroid didn't strike the earth 60 million years ago, none of us would be here. And it would be a very sad thought to ponder that US coins or MLB cards would have never been created.

There isn't enough NBA or Foreign teams for all the Want to Be Pros that play on College teams. These players need to realize the importance of getting an education while they are in college. Wonder how many players regret that they didn't actually study when they were in school and get something with the free education that they were given.
