Buy the dealer before the coin??

topstuftopstuf Posts: 14,803 ✭✭✭✭✭

Do you give extra preference to a coin if the dealer who offers it is a specialist in the series?
Not necessarily .... @Specialist..... but just known for handling the particular grade or type.

I don't care who has the coin unless they display an attitude then that's a different story

I like to collect 1921 Peace Dollar vam varieties. I would much rather buy it from someone who doesn't know what there are looking for. Part of the fun for me is cherry picking!

Buying from someone I do not know based on lousy photos is not in my comfort zone. I want to see good photos at least even on a slabbed coin. Don't much care who is selling, the coin is what counts.

I have always preferred buying from some dealers more than others. For me, buying coins is an experience, not just a transaction.

I prefer to buy from dealers I like because usually I get the best or a fair deal. They are the dealers I see first at the shows. After I have gone down my top dealer list, I work my way down.

I have bought coins "from the devil" if he had something I really wanted. It was his knowledge against mine. Usually "the devil" wanted too much money or is out to trap you. Sometimes "old scratch" has something that is worthwhile and fairly priced but not often.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. There are people who don’t know the Value. For example I bought a draped bust cent for $4. It’s worth $40 😂😂😂😂👍👍👍👍 I SCORED BIG TIME

My preference is to buy from a knowledgeable individual when purchasing coins of value. That being said, I have picked up a couple of nice coins from antique shops and one or two from ebay that were small cherrypicks...Cheers, RickO

@markelman1125 I appreciate your enthusiasm, but you only "score" in terms of profit once the coin is sold which then would establish your coin's "worth". Have you realized (sold your coin) for $40 (technically $36 in profit)?

I prefer buying from people I know. If there's an unanticipated problem, I know it will be resolved. If such dealer doesn't have what I am looking for, he / she may be able to play traffic cop and direct me to someone he / she trusts who can help me.

That said, there are some dealers from whom I will not make a purchase under any circumstances, for an assortment of reasons.

There are a few dealers I prefer buying from, not necessarily specialize in anything, but I have a good working relationship with. Now I have bought two coins from national dealers who specialize in a particular series, and even though I liked the coins a great deal, I paid for them because they had them and it was their specialty, Had they been with just a dealer, probably could have gotten them at a much better price to be honest!!

I buy from one dealer mainly but also have bought from two others at times. These folks have a good variety of what I collect. :):)

Buying from or having a dealer represent me as agent is really the only way to go at least for me. I am not able to grade with the precision needed nor do any have the market insight required to make the best decisions. That said, I will buy low value coins on my own.

I buy online and don’t like returning coins half the time, so yeah.

Dealers spend quite a bit of their time looking for exceptional examples of coins for their clients.

    They perform a valuable service.

I like most dealers, but there's a bullion guy from Springfield, IL that I just can't buy from. I just can't bring myself to deal with him.

I'm good with most any dealer if we are face to face. I have to know the dealer if buying from images.

It can work both ways. When I had my own rare coin business, there were certain clients/buyers who were easier and/or more enjoyable to work with. At the same time, there were others who made things more difficult and/or less fun.

Some place a value on working with dealers who make the sales/delivery process painless, have an eye for great coins, and are willing to take an occasional return (or send on approval first). That has a value to me. I also think it is incumbent on the buyer to follow through on commitments and provide proper communication throughout the process.

When these two factors align, it is great for both parties! :)
