Widget, classy, or dreck? (post a coin, get an answer)

RYKRYK Posts: 35,799 ✭✭✭✭✭

After being perennially peppered to define "dreck" in the context of collectible coins, I have realized that sometimes a picture is worth 1000 words. I am proposing that people post photos of their own coins (if they have a thick skin), their neighbors' coins, their rival's coins, or any coin they want, and I will classify the coin as a widget (Agree), classy (Like), or Dreck (LOL). In fact, any forum member will have the ability to vote on this critical numismatic categorization.

Let's have some fun with this!

In the spirit of the thread, I will post first. (I was going to post a photo of the quarter that has been face down on the floor of my daughter's car for several months, the one that looks too toxic to touch and spend, but alas she left for school before I could find the appropriate gloves to wear to pick it up).

From my boyhood collection:

Remember, vote...
Agree for widget
Like for classy
LOL for dreck

Go!

Well, you see, it's technically dreck because it's not in Laura's inventory. However, that looks like a nice EAC G6, and although I'm no HC expert, I'll hazard a guess at C-2.

In any case, you really don;t want that coin. You should send it to me for proper disposal.

Hmm, your vote says "dreck" but your comment speaks "classy". ;)

A marketable widget. Even though it is damaged it still has the aura associated with being from 1803. It would make a good album coin for a low budget collector.

Dont you have to also mention the grade and tpg to be categorized as dreck in many cases?

Nope! It might influence the opinion, but the coin should stand on its own (IMO).

And, possibly, even the price paid(?)!

If you were in the market, for budget reasons, for an AG-3, and found that you were happy with a F-12 with problems at the same price you would have paid, that "drecky" coin suddenly doesn't look so bad.

In other words, I agree that the broader context of a coin purchase is relevant....Isn't it?

I disagree. If I paid 10 cents for the quarter on the floor of my daughter's car, it is still dreck. If I paid $100,000 for a lovely, original XF-45 Dahlonega half eagle it is still classy. I am just a fool for overpaying for it. The coin is the coin.

Widget, classy and dreck are independent of price.

A widget means simply that there are a lot of them available in the market. There are both cheap and expensive widgets.

A classy coin can be enjoyed and appreciated no matter the cost. Many errors are cheap but very interesting to look at.

And dreck is just bad, no matter the price. Of course, there's some judgement on dreck, for example, are holed coins dreck? For many yes, but some people still collect them!

let take the meaning of dreck. translated it means
physically dirty items or matter. However it can be used as a word describing unworthy things.

Is a widget in a doily still a widget?

The widget in a doily is a widget but the combination of doily and coin is not a widget. Haven’t you heard the saying, “buy the holder, not the coin”? ;)

Melt bucket material. Barber coins like this used to be very common prior to the big silver price run-up of 1979-80.

It's easy enough to find classy on ebay, too, Tom. Start with "Highest Price" first.

There are proper ways to dispose of dreck, young man. Passing it off to another collector is considered unsavory.

True Joe, but since I don't have any muhself I was looking for obvious examples. Course if one is stacking 90% then looks don't much matter except for amount of wear. Even then a $100 bag of xf coins might garner more $$ that a $100 bag of what I posted.

Nice, for sure. May we call it a "Dreckula" coin because of the bite?

I was playing the coin gender odds, sorry about that. In that case, young lady, it would be even more inappropriate. A gentleman never gives dreck to a lady. (You can quote me on that. ;) )

my collection has been shaped over the years by trying to find "Classy" while sometimes having to also purchase "Widgets" along the way. the result is an accumulation of "Dreck" that I have been combing through for the past month or two.

Can something that is once a widget/classy become dreck? Perhaps with improper handling or storage (or maybe in the MoC smoking chamber), but otherwise? I do not believe that a collectible coin can morph into dreck.
