Page 2? C'mon, basketball people. Post 'em if you got 'em.
This Havlicek is one of my favorites. It is absolutely Mint+ -- razor sharp, clean corners, near perfect centering, clean edges, no print defects, just gorgeous to look at in-hand. Discoloration on the back dropped it down to a 7. Jackpot!
I was going to post my three PSA 8 Fleer Jordan RC's, but after seeing some of the cards you guys have posted already, I'm going to just sit back here in awe. Gorgeous cards gentlemen.
I have a ton of vintage bskt here. Clearly I need a better scanner to keep up with you guys.

Love that little run of '71s and '72s you have there. I've been patiently waiting for my Zelmo and Brown rookies to come along but nothing has clicked with me yet. I picked up a Maravich a little while back but I like yours better. The '71s are just so damn hard to find well-centered with zero tilt.
My Dr. J rookie has some roughness to the edges. The '84 Star Barkley rookie is basically impossible to find without a rough right edge. The '73s seem to have their fair share of less than ideal cuts to them as well.
I went cheap on my '88 Jordan sticker but I liked its centering and corners. You have to have large cajones to get into the high-grade Fleer stickers game.

Arthur
Arthur, Nike made poster cards to hang next to the poster rack, so you thumb through to see what the poster looked like before you purchased it. Even though this was from the 85 slam dunk contest, PSA designated these cards are from 83-85. They only thing that I can think of is that all the posters looked the same from 1983-1985, not knowing what year it truly came from they designated 83-85 on the cards. I hope this makes sense.

Ahh so you're saying there's a set and that set consists of cards with dates ranging from 1983-1985 and this Jordan happens to be in that set? I smell what you're stepping in. I was thinking it was like a one-off promo card. Didn't realize it was part of a set. I actually like it even more now. Thanks for clarifying.

Good question and I'd say probably. The two things I see going for it are the red seats and the left hand arm band. The 2 things going against it are I can't see the blue banners between the first and second levels and I can't see his gold neck chain.
That Pistol is a screamer. That's the type of 6 I would love to come across at some point. Congrats!

Has anyone else noticed, for 10 years plus, almost every 72 Erving had a print mark near the elbow? Lately, it seems like every copy does not have a print mark. I'm going to go out on a limb and say it feels like they have been counterfeited.
The Dr. J rookie is plagued by all sort of printing flaws, sort of like the Yaz rookie in baseball. You mentioned the white mark by his elbow (affectionately named "the barnacle" by me) but there also a lot of black smudging in the yellow backdrop, especially in the top-left quadrant. The red team name is also commonly found with fisheyes.
I'm not sure what you're using as your sample size but I can tell you there's plenty of Dr. Js on eBay with these print defects. I think most of the ones that get posted here on CU probably don''t have them because folks here tend to be a bit choosier than the average collector. Just take a look at the monthly pickup threads; so much of what gets posted are high end examples for the grade.
I know when I began shopping for my Dr. J I set my criteria as:
1. NO barnacle by left elbow,
2. NO black smudging in the yellow, and
3. centering
Unfortunately, the seller's picture wasn't a scan and it only looked like there was no black smudges so I ended up with some small ones. By that point, I had the card in-hand and sort of fell in love with it (along with getting one of the few 7.5s for a pretty good price). Anyway, my point is, when you have a card that is plagued by print defects it's not uncommon to see people set out determined to find examples without those print defects. It just takes time and patience.
There's been a huge uptick in the amount of sales of PSA 9 Erving rookies. Check this out. According to VCP, this is how many times a PSA 9 1972 Dr. J sold in each year:
2014: 7
2015: 9
2016: 22
2017: 14
2018: 22
I just went and checked the images on all the 2013 auctions. I think there was one PSA 9 example out of all of them that didn't have the barnacle. I'd bet PSA changed the way they view the barnacle and now see it as a print defect where as before they considered it too common to be penalized for. I think they've been buying them out of 9 holders as folks send them in to be reholdered and that's why we're seeing less and less PSA 9s with barnacles.

Thanks HighGradeLegends. A solid 6 for sure but not sure it would get more than a 6.5 on a review due to some print issues that are hard to see in the scan.

I'v noticed a lot of 8.5's come on the market in the last year or so as I have purchased and sold a couple of them. Both that I have sold had the barnacle. I did however end up with this one without the barnacle. Interesting thought that they would buy out the PSA 9's with the defect. I can't imagine that PSA would buy out many PSA 9 Dr. J's but then maybe that is why I have been seeing a lot of 8.5's in past couple of years. Great thread we have here.

The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."
I'm not sure what the barnacle would drop a 9 down to if they indeed changed the way they viewed it. I'm honestly just shooting from the hip. There could also just be nothing to it and it's just a perceived misconception. Who knows?
That Gunther Beer is awesome. I had heard of them but don't think I've ever actually seen one. Did they also have larger premiums?

Maybe I'm thinking of another early Beer issue. Great card, either way.
I guess I should post more cards.
I'm a sucker for bright colors. I love the 1970 set, even though the centering is enough to drive a man mad. I can't tell you how happy I was to finally find a Satch Sanders with this centering. A bunch of Hall of Famers and a soon-to-be (I think Hudson is going to get in):

Never good to be posting after UFFDAH!!! That Wilt is beyond ridiculous. The image color and overall registration is just stunning. Not to mention the other qualities like centering and sharp corners.
Anyway thought I would post my latest addition to get this thread back on the front page. I guess this could be considered his rookie card since it is before his 69 Topps card.

Get out of my head, I saw an 8 of that card for the first time today and wanted one for some reason. Agreed on posting after UFFDAH
Definitely Elvin's rookie, nice pickup. I've been eyeing one of those for a while. Surprisingly undervalued. His numbers when he entered the league are ridiculous.

Hiya Dave
Somewhere between 1992 and 94.
Thanx Abe.
Got the 61F back in the early 90s - a really crappy centering and barely an 8 IMO - the good news? This was around 3 or 400 bucks back then.
Wow! Awesome thread guys and the 61 Fleer cards are
Those '61 Big O's are outstanding!

Perhaps they outsourced it to O-Pee-Chee and paid them in beer. My Maravich certainly displays an OPC cut on the left edge.
