"traded the qb of the future away out of spite" - that could be considered a #4

"stole a guys wife" - I guess this could be considered a #6 - LOL

When I came in Monday morning, I was shocked to hear about the news reports about the footballs. I had no knowledge of the situation until Monday morning. [...] I think we all know that quarterbacks, kickers, specialists have certain preferences on the footballs. They know a lot more than I do. They're a lot more sensitive to it than I am. I hear them comment on it from time to time, but I can tell you, and they will tell you, that there's never any sympathy whatsoever from me on that subject. Zero. Well what was Belichick supposed to say? He's not going to risk getting fined or fired over something his QB may have done.

BTW, in my opinion Deflategate was a first class sick joke.

Well, the good news is that around ten years from now, i'll be changing the GOAT to Doug Pederson. ;)

Look,I think he is one of the best head coaches ever but the guy is far from perfect and as fans we have every right to call him out at times. Some years his ego gets placed before the state of the team and its hurt the team on numerous occasions.

I get you're a fan of him but like I keep saying, unless you've watched this team play every week for 17 years, you don't see that Brady is the driving force behind the Brady/Belichick led Patriots,

Really? Some other team than Philly must have given him a 9 year contract for this to happen. B)

Bill Belichick is a genius, and it's obvious. His interviews are fantastic, and i learn more about the game in almost every one of his interviews. I can't think of any other coach who even comes close to that.

As for Tom Brady. Of course he's an excellent QB and his tenacity is phenomenal which in a QB with talent, is without a doubt the most important attribute. That being said, Belichick seems to inspire tenacity in all of his players...and I have no doubt that Brady as a 6th round pick, without the tutelage of Bill Belichick would have likely turned out to be just an above average NFL QB...and Brady has basically stated that.

  • erikthredderikthredd Posts: 8,099 ✭✭✭✭✭

You have no clue on this subject,Steve. Belichick wasn't coaching Brady up when he went from the 4th string QB as a rookie to the #2 guy behind Bledsoe when he got hurt, the rest is just history. The only reason Bill Belichick still has a job in NE is because of Tom Brady and some random fan in Philly who probably watches less than a handful of Patriots games a year isn't gonna change that fact.
Brady wasn't even Belichick's pick, Bill wanted Tim Rattay, who went to the Niners right after Tom got drafted by NE. It was the late former Pats QB coach Dick Rehbein who convinced BB to take Brady.
Sure Belichick had a hand making Brady the player that he is today but that goes both ways. It's easy to look like a genius when your QB has a career .780 winning percentage as starting QB.

  • stevekstevek Posts: 27,582 ✭✭✭✭✭

    Quote from Tom Brady:

    Pasted:

"He's (Belichick) very respectful to me," Brady said. "We've had a great relationship. A very respectful relationship for a long time and I feel like he's the best coach in the history of the NFL.

"He has a management style of players that ... He would say, 'look, I'm not the easiest coach to play for' and I agree, he's not the easiest coach to play for, but he's the best for me. I think what he's proven is that whatever talent that he has he maximizes talent. I mean what more can you ask of a coach than that? That what I want as a player."

Brady added: "He's an incredible coach. He's been an incredible mentor for me. He's taught me so much football Like I said, being a 22-year old kid to come and learn from him, I mean I wouldn't be sitting here without his coaching."

  • erikthredderikthredd Posts: 8,099 ✭✭✭✭✭

You must not read many Tom Brady quotes, he talks up all of his teammates & coaches like he did there with Belichick. He's been that way since he took over the starting QB job in 2001.

Steve we're never gonna agree on who made who here so i'm gonna end today's debate here before we spend all day going back and forth.

Imagine another coach in NE the last 15 or how many years BB has been there. Would the Pats have still won 5 SBs. Probably, unless the coach was an idiot. Now imagine BB there but no Brady. How many SB wins? Probably a bit less than five. JMHO.

In a vacuum where one can overlook the serial cheating, Belichick is the dream maker. He can elevate any player with adequate skills, that has the desire, to star level.

  • perkdogperkdog Posts: 29,357 ✭✭✭✭✭

Serial “Cheating” if that’s what you want to call it even though it’s s complete joke happens with every professional sports team in some way shape or form. That is a fact

  • stevekstevek Posts: 27,582 ✭✭✭✭✭

Belichick was accused of "cheating" during the first Super Bowl between him and the Eagles. I for one never thought anything of it - much ado about nothing. The Patriots were clearly the better team in that Super Bowl, even though the Eagles played very hard to keep it close.

I think Belichick gets an uncalled for, bad rap for a number of reasons. Those jealous of his success probably at the top of the list.

so I confess I'm guilty as well. I normal eat corn chex but I bought rice crispies the other day and it was electrifying.

  • There was a local radio station debate this past week that was interesting.
Would you rather have Belicheck/Garrapollo or McDaniels/Brady going forward? Guess who the majority of Patriot's fans chose?
Sadly Patriot fans in my opinion don't appreciate Belicheck as much as they should.

  • perkdogperkdog Posts: 29,357 ✭✭✭✭✭

I’d take McDaniels and Brady 100%.

Sad thing is that the football deflating - which never actually happened and people only remember because the NFL lied to ESPN and ESPN lapped it up even after they knew it was false - is one of the things people accuse the Patriots of. Meanwhile, they ignore that two teams actually DID violate that rule with the footballs, DID get caught, DID have video evidence they'd done it, and they got... a letter from the league.

Tomorrow's game with the Patriots and Chiefs, I've got no skin in the game. Except that I like Belichick both on and off the field, and also it would be nice to see Andy Reid move on to a possible Super Bowl and get his first ring as a head coach. Although it's not any stretch to say that with a young Patrick Mahomes at QB, Reid will get a number of other opportunities to win a Super Bowl if he doesn't this season.

But if the Chiefs win the game, I'm not sure which will be more entertaining. Seeing Andy Reid move on to the Super Bowl, or seeing Perkdog mercilessly scathe Bill Belichick. ;)

Honestly I expect to lose tomorrow, I really do. I think the Chiefs and Rams are the best two teams and it’s not even close. I won’t bash Belichek, I mean after setting the team up for failure by giving Brady ZERO help in the WR dept this year it’s amazing that they are even playing in the AFC Chanpiobship game

This game is such a coin flip game, in my opinion.

One miscue by either team could turn the tables on this game, it's that close.

Brady will be Brady. The wild card in this thing is Patrick Mahomes. He had a decent but not great effort in his first playoff game last week with no interceptions, but no touchdown passes either. One thing for sure, Belichick will create a game plan to exploit the young quarterback's inexperience in different ways, and we shall see if it works or not.

My view is a young quarterback in the playoffs and Andy Reid's propensity to make coaching errors in key points in important games when the game is close, is not a good combination in this situation. I just think the Chiefs need to win the game easily, open up early and maintain a good lead to win it, because if it's close in the fourth quarter, i would have to give the edge to the Belichick-Brady combination to find a way to win it.

It should be a most interesting game.

Pats win. Not much more to say on the topic.

I would NOT trade my history for any teams. Not a one. This league is as great it is because of the New York Giants. Regardless of the four SuperBowl wins, they’ve been as important to the development of a quality league as any team.

But I wouldn't trade the Eagles past players for any other players. Ya get attached to them. :)

Just speaking for myself, i'm not looking for "charming" in a football coach. I want a head coach who wins football games and of course it's not debatable that Belichick does that. And as a sideline I'd like a head coach who is interesting.

Belichick will never make the NFL's top charming coaches. He may even be among the bottom in that category. But to me he's the most interesting coach to listen to over any other coach or anyone else who I have ever heard talk about the intricacies of the game of football.

    1. 32 teams, all things being equal, statistically means a team should win a Super Bowl only once every 32 years.
    2. Salary cap meaning a team simply cannot keep together their base of 22 starting players from season to season.
    3. Draft meaning a team literally gets penalized for winning by not being able to select among the top college players.

Yet, Belichick continues to put together his run.

Most if not almost all before it began would have said it was basically impossible. How could any sane person disagree with that? Yet it happened, and it keeps happening.

The only answer to this is "genius" that the rest of us football fan minions cannot ever fully comprehend. 🤔
