ANA Show Report

I decided to attend the World’s Fair of Money in Philadelphia for 3 main reasons. The first was that it’s in Philadelphia near where my buddy from high school currently lives. He said that he’d be happy to accompany me on the trip. Usually, I go to the shows on my own since my wife isn’t really interested in coins. It helps that he’s retired from the U.S. Department of Defense which entitles him to a military discount. We got a nice room in the Courtyard Marriott close to the convention center.
The second reason was that THE 1913 Liberty Head Nickel was going to be auctioned off and viewable. It’s numismatic history in the making and I wanted to hold the coin and admire it up close. I’ll never own a coin that valuable but I can get a thrill just seeing it and attending the auction.
The third reason was to acquire a nice Indian Head Cent. I wanted it to have a pleasing appearance and to be able to view it in hand before my purchase. Most of my collection consists of gold coins from the Carson City mint or a few special dates that I purchased from D.W.N.
So here’s my first attempt at a show report. Hopefully it will give you a flavor of Philadelphia and the ANA show.

My new coin. I love its appearance.
Tonight is the Rarities auction for the 1913 Nickel. It’s exciting to be here for the show. I hope that this gives you a feel for this years ANA convention. It’s great fun and a good place to learn.

Went to Philly last year for the PCGS member show and had a blast. If you leave the Reading Market still starving, you really need to catch the next plane home, that's just all kinds of wrong.

Nothing more fun than walking the aisles at a BIG coin show. Thanks for the chance to experience this one.

One thing I wish was more prevalent at Long Beach is the competition and/or educational displays. (I think they had some at one time, but it seems to have died off....) I guess LB is kind of the definition of a "commercial show". I enjoyed looking at them at the Anaheim ANA show....

There was a security guard that accompanied the coin. He allowed me to remove the slab from the intercept shield to examine it and have a picture taken. However, his job was to protect the coin and he did his job quite well. :)

Thanks for the interesting report. Your friend Tim looks as if he has designs on that gold bar! What a thrill to hold the 1913 nickel up close & personal. Excellent choice of a scarce, high grade RB Indian Cent.

I was stuck in the Philadelphia airport for hours last night. If I had planned in advance, I'd have been tempted to have stayed over a day for the show. Rats!

Thank you Ricko. I must admit that you are the one that motivated me to do a show report. I wasn’t sure if I could writeup what forum members were looking for. Since I was looking for interesting things to photograph I saw more than I would have otherwise. I know that I appreciate it when others tell their story of the show through their own eyes.

There is no carbon spot on the first S in STATES. Maybe a darker tone, but no spot.

One of the advantages of the Photo Seal, is that you can download the images from our web site:

    https://www.indiancent.com/index.php/photoseal/?ps_query=21573099&submit_query=Lookup

This particular coin was added to inventory by my son, Kenny, who is developing a great eye for coins. He is also the chief photographer for the coins, including this one. He was quite proud that Tom picked this coin over others and showed it off here on the forum.
