Always interested in sharp shooting but never able to hit a coin in mid air of course.
Really not hard to hit a coin in mid air if you use a 12ga with number 9 shot at ~20 to ~30 yards.
You are a better man than I am. I've missed lots of clays using a shotgun and they are (?%?) much bigger.
I usually can break 23 or 24 a round shooting clays (Trap) and that's using 7 1/2 shot with a full choke. Although I wouldn't recommend it, "If I were trying to hit a coin" I'd be a bit closer (say 20 to 30 yds) and use 9's with an improved cylinder. Should be able to hit a nickle or quarter without much trouble. 9's should you give you "almost" twice as many pellets as 7 1/2's per oz.
I never shoot my coins.... They are special. So, I run tactical courses and shoot targets...Then later, spend coins (but not my collection ).... It is fun though, to set up small targets for marksmanship. We usually use small chocolate chip cookies at distance... that way, no clean up and the critters get a treat...also makes a noticeable hit. Cheers, RickO
I hope some of you get to go to an open "plinking range." Folks put all sorts of "trash" out and shoot it up. Once a month there is a clean-up day. The spent bullets and fragments have been left there for years. One afternoon I picked up 32 pounds of lead to sell to the scrap guy in town.

My thoughts on the disagreeable practice of leaving a "disagree" without an explanation for further discussion:
If you can't add something to a discussion, just disagree without posting a reason. Then, some folks who don't see through this ruse will think you are informed on the topic while others will surmise that you don't.

I enjoy the interesting and knowledgeable discussions about coins on these boards. I read and am exposed to more than enough political arguments and debates throughout the day. Coins are my escape to a time in our country’s past. Discussing issues like guns or abortion get pretty heated and end up changing no ones mind imho. Instead they tear at friendships and civility.

A discussion must be civil, with the topic defined and including ONLY very informed folks on both sides stating their case. When this occurs, a person who has an open mind can have their opinion changed. For example, I know a person who was once an opponent of the death penalty. Now, he has suggested that a Pay-Per-View channel with proceeds going toward our National Debt would be a swell idea.
@Tomthemailcarrier ...Thank you for your clarification. That being said, as you can see, an amazing amount of people here are involved with both coins and guns. Also, for the most part, the postings have been very civil and interesting. With such a diverse and large membership, it is not surprising that interests will be many and varied. Most members here conduct themselves civilly - though there are always a few that get emotional. When I see threads I do not agree with or one's getting raucous, I skip them. Cheers, RickO
“On Friday the 19th Annie Oakley, the world-famous shot, will give one of her old-time exhibitions of trick shooting at the Gun Club. If you have the nerve to stand up to it, she might shoot an apple off the top of your head or shoot the ashes off the tip of your cigarette or shoot a nickel out of your fingers; and for her it is child’s play to smash five flying targets before they can touch the ground.”
These words appeared in the March 17, 1920 issue of the Pinehurst Outlook.
I am fortunate - coins, guns, and golf - a great trifecta! Any of you up for the apple off the top of your head trick? I'd do the nickel out of my fingers.

Re the Stone mountain video, and the person shooting over the top of the M60, instead of behind it.
Last month, I attended my 40th Army reunion when our unit disbanded. Among the toys we were allow to shoot, mostly M4's for us old timers who had never shot one, was an M2, Ma Deuce, .50 cal machine gun on a tripod. We had to be able to correctly prep it to fire, and I was the only one who would agree to shoot it, and hopped down behind it. opened the tray, loaded the belt with the M9 showing (they had laid the belt out upside down), double charged it, and locked down the bolt-latch release, and the NCO commented that apparently I still knew something about it. After being green lighted, I got to fire it, but fired over the sights, not through the sights, and adjusted fire based on impact and tracer trails.
@ShadyDave said: "Firearms are part of the fabric of the United States of America, and that will NEVER change."
Hate to say it but it will. Powerful progressive forces, our global enemies, and even the UN have been trying/ succeding to weaken our laws (legally I might add), erase our history, dumb down our children, and change the political landscape. Even a past President and his Attorney General were behind a scam to sell guns to drug dealers in order to be able to get folks to get behind gun confiscation.
Y'all do know a handgun is just a tool to use to fight your way back to your primary weapon - such as a shotgun (best for self defense)
Very true. Every time my home is invaded, I use my handgun to fight my way to my shotgun, then I use my shotgun to fight my way to my turret. From there, I can ingnite my napalm moat and I have a clear line of sight over the entire estate grounds (including my underground coin vault), so I can rain hot lead on the hapless intruders who are now trapped inside my ring of death.
@Washingtoniana - maybe @ricko can add all that to his repertoire when he teaches self defense class. Whatever it takes to best incapacitate the threat. But what about the threat of our own government? Ya might need more than a ring of death,

You're thinking too linearly. The 2nd amendment is safe for a reasonable length of time, maybe another generation or two, with no black swan event. But within that timeframe will be a black swan that will reset us toward conservativism, just as they always have in the past. Progressivism grows (festers?) in times of peace and stability, but the thing about future unpredictability is that it's so predictable.

Yes... Annie Oakley counter stamped all the coins with her name she tossed in the air and shot at Wild West Shows later giving them to kids. However as they are in great demand today just like anything else many counterfeits exist.
If one ever happened to turn up in my family circle, it might just be the real deal !!!
That would be neat.
