Fun with coins and guns!

Do coins and guns mix? YES, and a lot better than coins and politics IMO. >:)

Anyway, not long ago a buddy and I were on the shooting range and made a friendly little bet about who could hit a penny first at 30 feet with a Beretta 9mm. Yeah I know, probably not your choice of handgun but that's our service weapon and what we were firing with that day, so there you go. @ricko 's S&W Model 29 double action 44 Magnum probably would have been a better choice, but Dirty Harry was borrowing it that day so it was unavailable. I digress.... ;)

If you're wondering how this worked, we each simply taped a penny to the end of a string and then hung them from the rafters of the firing range in our respective firing lanes.

The GOOD news is we only used pennies ... and yes, coins were harmed as a result of this bet, so if you're offended by that dear reader do not view the photo below. :p

The BETTER news is that I'm only out one cent, as my penny is no longer spendable. :)

The BAD news is that I know a couple of forum members are going to PM me to tell me this penny is some kind of rare Wexler variety or something and I just destroyed a penny worth a couple hundred dollars! :D

The BEST news though is that I won the bet, hitting the penny just a few shots into my 15-round clip. B)

So ... if there are no shows in your area and you're looking for a fun, weekend coin activity this could be it! Just saying!

Hitting a Cent at 30 feet sounds very tough. Standing, two handed I assume?

Coins and guns definitely mix. Some of the coin shops I've been in could pass for a gun shop!

I'll take an 8" Royal Blue Colt Python Hunter to that contest. :)

I favor my S&W 686 with 6 inch barrel. For a sure hit there's the Fox shotgun. Good shooting with an auto. I just do better with a wheelgun. Good post.

I didn’t know a cent would break apart like that, in the westerns the silver dollar was just bent or maybe a hole in it.

Y'all do know a handgun is just a tool to use to fight your way back to your primary weapon - such as a shotgun (best for self defense)

This remind me of the civil war. They melted anything metal to make a slug. We are all so bless to not have to live in those times. I cannot imagine. Families on different sides. fighting just for a meal. soldiers invading homes. Just feel so grateful and blessed.

Not bad with a 9mm and off hand. I have a couple of 22 target pistols (original High Standards with 7 1/4 fluted barrels) that can put a box of 50 (Eley ammo) in a hole that can be "easily" covered by a quarter at 30 feet, off a simple rest, and I'm not a very good shot. Just goes to show you what a quality gun and good target ammo can do.

I like your 'distinguished' badge there Dave. There are probably not too many of those in the Air Force. I'm not familiar with the other two medals.
My dad recently passed away. As the only other shooter in the family I inherited his distinguished medal. I think that he earned this around 1966.

I had to laugh at that, as a while back, my daughter and her fiance wanted to shoot a gun (neither of them had ever fired a gun before). At the range, set them up, 1 at a time, with a single action .22 revolver, lots of coaching and safety. They hit NOTHING until we got the target to about 6' away, and then they could understand better what they were doing wrong.

Just for grins, I took a regular target, and put a thumbtack dead center for an aiming point, and put it at, IIRC, the 15 meter, might have been 20 meter line, and used my .45 Colt M1911, and LUCK drilled out the thumbtack, 1st shot. It is not a customized .45, but very high quality, and I had a palm size group with the whole mag. I also have probably 10,000+ rounds through .45's while in the Army, even a short stint on a division level pistol team.

They were in AWE of Dad.

My instructor showed me that you can be fast enough with iron sights using good technique and practice, that lasers and red dots slow you down and even reduce accuracy.

I saw Beretta 9, my carry of choice. What flavor? Px4 Storm compact here, love it.

IMO, Beretta made some of the most attractive pistols. I have a few in different calibers but only in "blue" finish. the 92-S was the end of my collection.

This usually eliminates the distaste or fear of these inanimate objects. Let me know by PM if you would like my help... This is offered in all honesty, friendship and hope that you will stay and we can all remain friends. Cheers, RickO

You certainly can. However, there are many of us who are involved with both hobbies, so you will often see threads such as these. So the'we' part will not work. Cheers, RickO

    @ricko seriously?
How about coin and gun stick together ;)

One of the best carved nickels I've ever seen. That would bring a good deal of money in an auction. They would need to pry it from my cold, dead hands if it were mine. :)

For whatever reason, the group of those who collect coins and the group of those who enjoy firearms intersect deeply. That’s just the way it is.

I do pretty darn well with a rifle (out to 1000 yards) and decently with a shotgun. Hitting anything with a pistol takes plenty of training and practice. Haven’t mastered that one........ yet. It’s on the to-do list. :)
