Fun with coins and guns!
Do coins and guns mix? YES, and a lot better than coins and politics IMO.
Anyway, not long ago a buddy and I were on the shooting range and made a friendly little bet about who could hit a penny first at 30 feet with a Beretta 9mm. Yeah I know, probably not your choice of handgun but that's our service weapon and what we were firing with that day, so there you go. @ricko 's S&W Model 29 double action 44 Magnum probably would have been a better choice, but Dirty Harry was borrowing it that day so it was unavailable. I digress....
If you're wondering how this worked, we each simply taped a penny to the end of a string and then hung them from the rafters of the firing range in our respective firing lanes.
The GOOD news is we only used pennies ... and yes, coins were harmed as a result of this bet, so if you're offended by that dear reader do not view the photo below.
The BETTER news is that I'm only out one cent, as my penny is no longer spendable.
The BAD news is that I know a couple of forum members are going to PM me to tell me this penny is some kind of rare Wexler variety or something and I just destroyed a penny worth a couple hundred dollars!
The BEST news though is that I won the bet, hitting the penny just a few shots into my 15-round clip.
So ... if there are no shows in your area and you're looking for a fun, weekend coin activity this could be it! Just saying!

Great story !!!
Hitting a Cent at 30 feet sounds very tough. Standing, two handed I assume?

Yes, standing position, two-handed with no support ... just like the cops on TV haha.

...good shooting...and it's your 15-round magazine
@EXOJUNKIE ....Well done... open sights or red dot?? Either way, a good shot.... Cheers, RickO
Coins and guns definitely mix. Some of the coin shops I've been in could pass for a gun shop!

I'll take an 8" Royal Blue Colt Python Hunter to that contest.
I favor my S&W 686 with 6 inch barrel. For a sure hit there's the Fox shotgun. Good shooting with an auto. I just do better with a wheelgun. Good post.
@Insider2 ....And most gun shows also have a table or two with coins... I have purchased several coins at gun shows....Cheers, RickO
Yup.
Can we leave the second amendment and coinage separate?

And I should not have to write please...

I didn’t know a cent would break apart like that, in the westerns the silver dollar was just bent or maybe a hole in it.
Ask the author!
It's probably the zinc.
"Can we leave the second amendment and coinage separate?"
You certainly can. However, there are many of us who are involved with both hobbies, so you will often see threads such as these. So the'we' part will not work. Cheers, RickO
Yep, it's a 2014 DDO ...
Y'all do know a handgun is just a tool to use to fight your way back to your primary weapon - such as a shotgun (best for self defense)
This remind me of the civil war. They melted anything metal to make a slug. We are all so bless to not have to live in those times. I cannot imagine. Families on different sides. fighting just for a meal. soldiers invading homes. Just feel so grateful and blessed.
Best place to buy !

Well if I had a ruler handy I'd... oh wait ASDFGHJK mines that long.

Well... I just don 't know what to say or write anymore... One can complain about the political threads, but that cover is beyond what is reasonable. Please ban me now... Just Refund my membership fees now as I have not submitted anything and in exchange I will never have anything to do with PCGS again...Ever again. I think that is not an unreasonable request.
Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
@ricko seriously?
How about coin and gun stick together
And if this is acceptable, please delete my registry sets as I suspect PCGS has the ability to do this easier and faster than I can. I do not want my coins to be on your registry. End of discussion

Not bad with a 9mm and off hand. I have a couple of 22 target pistols (original High Standards with 7 1/4 fluted barrels) that can put a box of 50 (Eley ammo) in a hole that can be "easily" covered by a quarter at 30 feet, off a simple rest, and I'm not a very good shot. Just goes to show you what a quality gun and good target ammo can do.
Relax. Guns are not a problem by themselves. Go buy one and have a good day on the range.
If you can hit the penny at 50 yards with one hand using a 45 ACP, you may be able to earn something like this.
The sad news is I have not been banned yet... The good news is I choose not to shoot at US coinage...

Or at anyone or anything else...I hope this ends my participation in this thread even though I doubt that it will

I like your 'distinguished' badge there Dave. There are probably not too many of those in the Air Force. I'm not familiar with the other two medals.
My dad recently passed away. As the only other shooter in the family I inherited his distinguished medal. I think that he earned this around 1966.
Does gold and coin offend, too?
I had to laugh at that, as a while back, my daughter and her fiance wanted to shoot a gun (neither of them had ever fired a gun before). At the range, set them up, 1 at a time, with a single action .22 revolver, lots of coaching and safety. They hit NOTHING until we got the target to about 6' away, and then they could understand better what they were doing wrong.
Just for grins, I took a regular target, and put a thumbtack dead center for an aiming point, and put it at, IIRC, the 15 meter, might have been 20 meter line, and used my .45 Colt M1911, and LUCK drilled out the thumbtack, 1st shot. It is not a customized .45, but very high quality, and I had a palm size group with the whole mag. I also have probably 10,000+ rounds through .45's while in the Army, even a short stint on a division level pistol team.
They were in AWE of Dad.
I was about the 300th or so in the Air Force to earn Gold Distinguished. It is actually 18k gold. The other two are bronze and silver distinguished... earned on the way to gold.
Didn’t mean to hijack the thread. I love a good gun and coin thread.
Are there any holes coins out there that were hit by Annie Oakley? Peace Roy

GREAT story, thanks for sharing it. And the M1911 is my favorite handgun of all time.

My instructor showed me that you can be fast enough with iron sights using good technique and practice, that lasers and red dots slow you down and even reduce accuracy.
Even in Canada Coins and Guns come together, I received one of these in change the other day, I was like WOW, Canada has guns on coins

Glen Beck has a coin w/hole she shot, a split through the edge playing card, and some of the glass balls they threw into the air. He did much of a show on her and her exploits. There have been (still are) some amazing things done with guns by professionals.
I have been able to coax folks who hate guns (mostly females) to the range and by the time I finish with them they are mostly hitting the black and begging to come to the range again. Trick is they see how safe guns are, learn proper sighting, trigger pull and breathing - its easy for anyone. Start them with long barrel 22LR. Over time, most folks prefer to shoot the 45 auto! Guns are fun! I even took a famous coin dealer shooting for his first time when he came down to FL. New gun lover.
It seems most folks are afraid of the unknown. I was taught gun safety by my father. As a child at camp, we learned archery and marksmanship. We ran around the neighborhood in DC playing cowboys or soldiers using army surplus rifles that seemed bigger then ourselves. Today the kids are kicked out of school for pointing a finger.
I'm not gong to waste my time replying to the folks who talk about school shootings as I could limit the casualties to two or three (if it school shootings continued after my simple solution...LOL) A similar plan would put an end to airplane hijackings too. Each passenger would find a hatchet in the seat pocket. LOL!
PS GUNS ARE FUN!
The Swiss have some nice pieces w/guns.
I saw Beretta 9, my carry of choice. What flavor? Px4 Storm compact here, love it.
@NVU...That is a great coin.... would love to have one of those... Thanks for showing us....Cheers, RickO
IMO, Beretta made some of the most attractive pistols. I have a few in different calibers but only in "blue" finish. the 92-S was the end of my collection.
@coinkat .... Sorry to see you go.... You have had some good contributions here... would it not be easier to just skip the threads you do not like? Or, I would be happy to give you lessons in firearms.. I am a state certified instructor and licensed to carry in 38 states, I would be happy to help. This usually eliminates the distaste or fear of these inanimate objects. Let me know by PM if you would like my help... This is offered in all honesty, friendship and hope that you will stay and we can all remain friends. Cheers, RickO

Better bring a lot of ammo as he's going to love it!
One of the best carved nickels I've ever seen. That would bring a good deal of money in an auction. They would need to pry it from my cold, dead hands if it were mine.
Yep... @Insider2 ... You and I would have 'shoot off' to see who would get it.... Cheers, RickO
Guns are good fun when used for sport target practice by responsible adults.
And of course they are important tools for military and police.
It's when they are used for crimes in "real life" that it gets complicated and political.
Unfortunately guns are used for both good and bad....
For whatever reason, the group of those who collect coins and the group of those who enjoy firearms intersect deeply. That’s just the way it is.
I do pretty darn well with a rifle (out to 1000 yards) and decently with a shotgun. Hitting anything with a pistol takes plenty of training and practice. Haven’t mastered that one........ yet. It’s on the to-do list.
...same with coins and money...any and all money...it’s up to the operator of the tool to provide an outcome for its use...good or bad
