<< Cash transaction? At an IHOP? Hope your friend enjoys his Mantles, cause he's an owner. >>

I've actually met someone at Ihop before, ended up being a $500 vintage purchase. He was very very pleasant.

<< I hope this doesnt go to court, its tough finding jurors these days. >>

Small claims has no jurors.

Edited to add:

You can appeal the judges decision in small claims and get to a jury at trial though.

He said the guy was actually a "normal guy". He told me that he told the guy that he needed to open up the 51 Mantle from the screw in case and the guy was freakin out about in (in the sense that he didn't want it to get damaged.)

Maybe the seller was telling the truth but at this point he needs to do whats right and refund the money I believe. The seller wont because the seller after being confronted about this over the phone was telling the dealer "ok, go ahead and try to sue me" when my dealer friend was just saying "hey, lets just take care of this ourselves and not get the legal system involved." He tried to handle the situation as best as he could. Losing $2200 is no joke.

I'm going to want to shoot myself for asking the obvious, but if your friend couldn't tell that some of the cards were bogus when he bought them, how did he determine that they were not good after the fact? And if they were sent to PSA, what was the cause for rejection? This story seems to have more holes than a slice of Alpine Lace Swiss...

sorry to hear that, but its a done deal unless he wants to chuck a rock through the window
like someone said, the seller can always claim that the cards were switched if he tries to take them to court/police
(unless he has the scans from the CL ad, that may help)

Topps cant and wont do anything (lawsuit) on cards 40-50 years old

Im guessing he is a newbie to older Topps cards

in person, fakes of those card should never fool some one who handles them often.

For newbies....... always buy a common or two from each set you want to collect before you go to shows etc. that way you can easily match up the cards (size mainly, but also the surface gloss, stock thickness, back color, back stock color, wear characteristics, etc.)

Good Question - At the card show he showed a couple of very knowledgeable guys who deal mostly in vintage which they pointed out that it was a bad purchase. He also then compared with other "actual" Mantle cards and realized he had been taken.

Congratulations on your extreme success, but it's the first post I've seen on these forums involving Craiglist that didn't mention someone getting screwed with a rusty railroad spike.

The end of the OP: "Maybe the seller really thinks there real but they are definitely not after checking with 2 other trusted and reputable sources." I don't know who the two sources were, though.

One point: if the friend had the where with all to consult experts after the fact, did he ever think to go with the seller to a card store and consult the owner's opinion? I have had people from craigslist come into my store before and solicit free advice from me on matters such as this, so this may be something for him to consider in the future.

fkw's advice to have a "holotype," if you will, is also a good tidbit.

<< I advised to maybe have a policeman show up to the guys house with him... >>

Exactly. Cops, believe it or not, are well-versed in what's a fake Mantle or not, and are readily available to go to whatever house anyone may direct them to in order to resolve these kind of disputes.
