A lil background info on F. C. C. Boyd...
Most of the F. C. C. Boyd collection was in the Stack's John J. Ford sales and here's some info I ran across on the web doing some research... The mid-1940s were the twilight numismatic (coin-collecting) years for “Fred” C. C. Boyd, who in his life combined the fortunate circumstances of being a highly successful business… -
Re: Is it common for dealers to buy from auctions and sell on the bay?
You're assuming that it is a widget that has a fixed price with little deviation. You'd be hard-pressed to execute the arbitrage with a common date MS-65 Morgan. But for the less clearly priced items, sometimes a coin slips through the cracks. It could be because it is surrounded by "better" coins or "worse" coins.… -

Re: 1869 Washington Memorial Norwalk CT Baker B-369C (on eBay)
A lil background info on F. C. C. Boyd... The mid-1940s were the twilight numismatic (coin-collecting) years for “Fred” C. C. Boyd, who in his life combined the fortunate circumstances of being a highly successful business executive and a discriminating collector of rare coins. Actually, in the early years he may have… -
Re: The times they are a-changing' - more slabbed copper?
When PCGS first announced it would slab colonials, it was very controversial*. The market will drive this decision. << <i>*Chicago Tribune September 29, 1991 By Roger Boye. Irate Collectors Hit Plastic Casing As A Slab In The Face The country`s largest coin-grading service still plans to place rare colonial coins in… -
Re: 1858 $10: a classic rarity of US gold

While this is, indeed, a scarce and desirable coin, it's also a true "specialist's coin", in that it's a tough coin to sell. I saw one at at the White Plains, NY coin show a couple of years or so ago. The dealer, who had a case full of pricy material, wasn't too happy to have it. He had purchased it on his own initiative… -
Re: Is this fuzzy thinking?
There is a lot of risk, and a lot of difference between a nice MS65, and a marginal one. A nice one might sell for double what a marginal coin at true auction, even if the coins are in the same company's holder. ANACS is definitely a step lower on expensive coins that are over $500 in value, and many will move at a… -
Re: VAM'ers..about the 1896-O small "O" VAM-4
Actually, about two years, The Executive Coin Company (tecc1 or tecc?) sold one on eBay. The first time around, it got yanked by eBay. The second time, it went all the way. The coin sold for about $175 if I recall correctly. I was unaware of a second one turning up at a junk box. I still check for those, too, but have not… -
Re: How about posting some coins from your type set 7070

First is a toned 1842 Seated Dollar which was graded by ANACS as a AU55. Picked up from Teletrade. GORGEOUS Toning! Second is a 1868 Seated Dollar bought from Executive Coin company. The price was right and the coin is gorgeous in hand! Next is a nicely toned Trade Dollar which was graded by NGC as a MS60. Lastly, and one… -
