Re: How do you grade Ike dollars? Any tips?
Spots are not allowed on 70s. See "the great milk spot controversy" for details. But a spot here or there doesn't preclude 69, 68, 67 etc. That "blanket statement" is wholly accurate. Now, SOME spots will preclude any number of grades including ALL straight grades. But, you just said "spots" without further description.… -
Re: Milkspots on a $500 ASE 20th set?
1) The coins are raw and milk-spotted so people saying "I keep them raw to reduce chance of milk-spotting" better be careful...it isn't all about the slabs but likely about the storage environment 2) Whoever wins the set shouldn't return them because of the milkspots...they are readily visible. 3) It may already be trading… -
Silver Brazil, Silver Portuguese India, and...Palestine Protectorate? All gone to eBay!

1911 Brasil 2000 Reis. Beautiful blast white with great luster and cartwheel. .900 silver, 20 grams. KM#508 $22: NOW $20! 1912 / 1 Portuguese India 1 Rupia. Lustrous and well-struck but some hairlines, one dark spot reverse. I'd say AU53 at worst, maybe a 58. Check my images: I don't know the series, but that sure looks… -
Re: TPG companies
Derryb, Wouldn't that make PCGS a more superior company because they hold their grades at a higher value knowing that a coin will have milk spots...say for instance they grade a Unc. silver MS-70 and 5 years down the line it gets milk spots...then people would be saying "wow PCGS doesn't know how to grade, look at that… -

will pcgs offer "spot" cleaning on eagles?

Just out of curiosity (I have some mint sealed 20th anniversary sae sets that need grading) if the coins are removed by PCGS for grading, and they have milk spots on them, what happens? Do they offer a "cleaning" service for an upcharge? Do they bodybag them and send them back to you ungraded? If they do send them back and… -
Re: What's happening with the 25th anniversary sets? Is this a good deal or should I wait for the price
<< <i>Has it ever been proven or not that a rinse in acetone lessens the odds of milk spots showing up? >> No. The spotting, IMO, is not caused from an organically based contamination which "typically" causes dark toning on silver coins. The milk spots are believed to be caused from the final rinse of the cleaned planchets… -
Re: PCGS Restoration Service Question: One sided dip?
Milk spots are serious corrosion with an exquisite euphemism. "Milky spots" I can work with. Further dipping usually increases the contrast between lustrous and eaten-away surfaces. I remember when the Redfield Hoard came out. Much ado was made of Redfield's storage of peach juice in the same area as were the bags upon… -
What is this raised Line on this AH Kennedy?

I picked up this AH Kennedy for melt price at a coin show this weekend. The dealer was selling individual coins out of a Dansco Type Set Album and apparently just wanted to get rid of it. The coin is half decent with a bit of a Cameo and just a few minor milk spots except for the upper right obnerse rim area. In this area…
