Can any trade dollar experts offer me a ray of sunshine?
I just bought this coin 1878cc trade dollar in an NGC holder graded AU details “improperly cleaned”.
Do you think I have any chance of submitting to PCGS and being given a number grade?
I actually like the look of the coin anyway, and it will fit perfectly into my key date type set, but Im thinking if PCGS would grade it “50 ish” then I might possibly qualify for the coveted “You Suck”, considering I almost never see this date available anywhere (outside of china).

a PCGS Genuine or other TPG net graded ?
I would be surprised if it went from raw- never slabed to NGC.

Yeap, it's like asking the Queen if you can be Knighted.

I think your coin has a very slim chance of straight grading, but it's worth a shot. I agree with Crypto, I have seen worse graded, but many of those were graded long ago.
Will then post the results.
-Thanks
Where is the err in my logic?
It was my original opinion (from the photos) that the graders thought the coin was over-dipped an thus retoned but I think a great percentage of dipped coins end up in holders.
<< <i>Question - The price lists this coin as worth $16,500 in 60, $9000 in 55, and $4250 in 40. These coin is listed as having AU details. I assume that the hairlines are VERY superficial. If you crack this thing out and carry it around wouldn't the general wear from the "circulation" wear down and/or hide the hairlines? If so, you could wear this bad boy down to a 40 and still be sitting pretty.

It is easy to wear a silver coin down a grade or two what is hard to do is replicate the 100years that it originally sat in a drawer after it finished circulating. A pocket piece comes out looking polished and shiny more often than not

It has Been my experience that price guides for key dates for coins are a Joke. Can anyone tell me what PCGS coins are actualy selling for?

There quite literally arent any. I have seen less than two handfuls of pcgs 78-ccs in the last decade

Oh? That can't be good
<< <i>Actually, I am hairlinephobic, but I dont see the indications of cleaning hairlines that others are commenting on.

I just pulled up the coin on ngc and they have photos up and the obverse looks pretty hairlined, more so then sellers photos looked and I was checking out that mint mark cause it looks funky with all that toning so I decided to pull the cert.

The big question now is do I send it as cross -over or am I forced to crack it out for a chance at a graded coin?
I will be happy to keep this coin in my collection and I can live with a Genuine holder, for this date with this look, but is it possible to send PCGS a coin in a holder saying "improperly cleaned" and have any sliver of a chance of getting a grade?
edited for spelling.
<< <i>OK the coin is here the hair lines look consistent with a lightly circulated coin, but the color makes me want to say re toned. >>
By the way, how is the color, front vs. back? The pictures of the coin in slab made it look like the toning was different between the two sides. If so, that will not bode well for a straight grade.
Thanks for the opinions
But don't crack it out and carry it around in your pocket. I did that once with a very badly hairlined Trade dollar. It was a 76-P chopmarked Trade, which I purchased for next to nothing, but is actually pretty scarce. But I just could not stand the hairlines. After about 4-5 months in my pocket, most of the hairlines were gone, the coin dropped a grade from wear, but exactly as Crypto said, it had that shiny, polished look.

Wow nice score! Like I said above, I think NGC can be harder on trade dollars when it comes to potential problem coins . I also think PCGS gives the rare ones a break.

Cha-ching!!
It didn't look too bad from the seller's photos.
I remember viewing that auction. If I wasn't using my parent's money I would've gone for the coin too

I'd say you just might be the expert now. Good job!

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
After seeing the coin in hand, I would not have thought PCGS or NGC would give the coin a numerical grade.

TBH I liked the auction pictures too and the color of the coin. I don't know a lot about trade dollars though and wouldn't be willing to gamble the 2k+ on it!
