Old find from my grandparents... curious on background?

Hi everybody-

My grandparents gave me a box that had 4 metal pieces back when I was little. I recently rediscovered it in my room, and was curious to learn more about it.

They're 4 bricks that appear to be silver, with slight discoloring on them. There is a 4oz, 3oz, 5oz, and 7oz piece in the case. They're stamped with JMC, a maple leaf, 999+, and the weight. I've been able to find out that they're from Johnson Matthey, but not much else.

Anybody know if there is more background to them? Approximate worth? Thank you in advance!

What a great find! They are worth way more than melt, some other members can give you more exact numbers as I do not follow old pour bars anymore

I don't collect silver bars..... But I think the 3oz go for crazy money.

Do they look like these? The 1 oz'ers typically go for $125. The 3's typically go between $190-235. The 5's for around $240-275 and the 7 oz'ers for $360-400.
These are all very realistic values and with some patience on your part, you will get these amounts, even after fees on eBay.

Thanks for the warm welcome! image

    By the way, a correction- It's a 3, 4, 5, and 7 ounce (a 4oz instead of the 1oz I originally thought)

And apologies for the upside-down picture, only noticed after I uploaded!

As is, I would think you should get at least $1100 for it, and that would be after fees on eBay.
    Very nice, thanks for sharing.

I don't think the case is custom, I've seen the exact same set w/ the case on ebay a couple of times in the past.

    Definitely a very nice score!

    GLWS if that's your plans.

You may be right, I was just saying that because it has no logo/company written on it.
Maybe there was some paper together.

    Still a cool set!

    Thanks for the help, everybody!

Not really looking to sell, I'm going to hold on to it for now. My Grandpa passed away when I was 3, so I like holding on to some of the things I got from him. Quite a community you all have here that you can give me an answer in a few hours- thanks, again!

So happy to hear you say that, I hate to see people sell stuff from their ancestors... like on Pawn stars, "Here is my great grandfather's hat and sword from the civil war, how much can I get for gnd so I can go see a show, have a fancy meal, and gamble??"

Very neat set of bars that your own grandkids would be thrilled to receive (or, at least, they'll get a lot more FedBucks then image )

That is a very nice set that many people here would love to own. That said, I agree with everyone here who already said that we're happy you've decided to keep it. Don't ever sell that unless you really, really, really need the money. What a great gift your grandparents have given you.

Mk4, nice JMC set and welcome. piecesofme is spot on with the value. The bars in total are worth about $1,000-$1,200. The cases are surprisingly hard to find and yours adds to the set's value.

The case is original and in nice shape. Cases were made for both the 3oz, 4 oz, 5 oz & 7 oz set along with a larger case for a five piece set including the 10 oz bar.

Here is what the larger case looks like. The 10 oz bars don't show up too frequently.

My case is not on hand to check but I don't recall anything written on the plastic.

This is great resource, but all JM bars made are not there. New types show up from time to time. OnlyGold's 10oz is not
    there.

That is an great set. Welcome to the boards.
