    Trial strike?

Is it made out of gold or some other metal? Maybe it's the picture but I have to admit I've never seen a coin with that type of look with gold before. Very interesting to say the least.

produced after the die had been retired? The die looks pretty rusted.

I've always liked splashers - here's one for CA gold fans.

Tough to get closer to the die makers hands......unless they are latter day fakes.

I'll have to photograph the other side - it is has a ghost image of the reverse - it looks as though it was on a piece of leather or something else with a little give to it when the impression was made.

Goldeneye - I think the die is fresh - a lot of what you are seeing is oxidation - the areas without oxidation show VERY sharp die striations - I think it would be a safe bet that this die had not struck any gold coins when this impression was taken.

It's actually both a Moffat and a Kellogg - I discovered that they used the same dies a while ago.

Great piece and discovery! It's neat to know Moffat and Kellogg used the same dies. Is the die maker known?

@Regulated: That is cool, but for my taste I'd prefer the LakeSammie piece : )
