As a long-time collector of Charlotte gold, I've always thought that moving into the Bechtler private issue realm to be a natural progression, since both the Charlotte mint's and Bechtler's operations coincided for many years, with both of their products circulating side-by-side. This represents my first Bechtler purchase, but certainly not my last. The bug may have bitten...

Oh yeah... while I was at the show, I happened upon this nice, original Capped Bust Early $5 that happens to have some very intriguing (and pronounced) clash marks:

    I'll guess AU55 on the 1811 and really like the clashed dies... XF45 on the Bechtler.

    I believe I was standing next to you when you asked to look at the Bechtler Dollar. I believe it was at Kagin's table. I was drooling over the California Ag. medal that was awarded to a guitar maker.

    Close CD, but not quite. It was a toss up between one of the Bechtler's at Kagin's and one that John Danreuther had... had, as in past tense. image

    And the grades are:

    $1 Bechtler: NGC AU-55 (I think AU-55 is pushing it a little, more like an AU-53 with crusty, original surfaces).

    1811 $5: PCGS AU-55 w/CAC green bean

    I agree with you Joebb -- the 1811 has almost full luster (85 - 90%) that's blanketed by a nice sheen of yellow-orange patina. And unless I'm blind... literally no marks or rim dings on the coin w/exception of a minute nick under Liberty's eye, and two tiny ticks above the eagle's head. It does have a few very light wear indicators on the highest fold of Liberty's gown, a couple of her curls (just under the "T" and the back/bottom of the cap) and stars #3 & 6. My vote would be an AU-58. Let me put it this way, I was extremely (yet pleasantly) surprised to find a coin of this type, that looked this nice, in an AU-55 holder.... and that's why I worked its purchase from the prior owner.

    On the Bechtler's wavy planchet I should have looked at the AU meat left on the "7" but spent more time looking at the rims...

    Not used to seeing rims on these as on the PCGS examples they are swallowed up by the gasket.

    I finally bought my first Bechtler dollar last year after many years of looking. The Bechtler coins are cool, but once you get beyond the dollars they get very pricey.
    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    'Tis true indeed, Bill.... I saw an absolutely beautiful $5 Bechtler at J&H's table Friday morning at Baltimore... PCGS AU-50 / CAC, and the color/originality was, dare I say, captivating. I had already hit my budget limit w/the $1 Bechtler and $5 Capped Bust HE, otherwise, I may have pooled my initial resources together and sprung for it. It was a "gem" for the grade.
