  If it's a 42-S Mercury Dime, the odds are
  great that it's ejection/mechanical doubling,
  a VERY common effect on many many coins,
  especially Mercury Dimes.
  
  Scans would help, but if the second image
  you see, off the main date, is flatter, that's
  a sign of E/M.D

  If a coin is truly doubled, you will see "notching", and you're probably seeing shelf doubling or what is called "machine doubling", and I'm speculating without photos on this '42 S, but if so, it's a minor variety and doesn't carry much of a premium. The condition on the 1921 D Winged Liberty dime is key to it's value.

  Go to PCGS Photograde to grade the 1921-D dime if you're unable to post a picture.
