Error cent question

ajaanajaan Posts: 17,588 ✭✭✭✭✭
How common is this error? I picked it out of a dealer's bargain bin today. The dealer deals mainly in World coins so I was surprised to see it in there. What's the value of the coin? TIA.

    That's a nice off-center bronze cent with a date. I don't recall that 1971-D is a rare date/MM, so I would guess a retail value in the $25-30 range.

It's a great start to a "clock" set of major off-center cents!

Thanks. I guess I did OK then. I paid $1.40 for it.

$25 to $50 sounds a bit high, but I have not shopped for one of these in a while. Cents are produced in huge quantities and they are the denomination that is most likely to display a a massive off-center strike like this. The fact that it has a date and mint mark is a big plus. The dateless pieces are much more common and worth less because the date can't be determined and supply is much larger. The reason is that they can come from any year.

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    Yes sir!!!image

Another question while we're at it....

Just how do these coins end up in circulation?
When cents leave the mint, are they in rolls or bags? And if rolled, i don't see how these odd shapes could sneak through.
I've NEVER found one of these in circulation. Just curious

It's nice, being bronze and having a full date makes it better.

You got a good deal on it, a steal for $1.40!

Cool find.. and at that price, a nice acquisition. Although I am not an error collector, I would pick up one like that, especially so cheaply. Cheers, RickO

I don't really collect errors but when I saw this one in the bargain bin at that price, it was marked $3.00 w/50% off but I got it for less because I bought some other World coins, I just couldn't resist.
