    based on the prices larry received when he sold , I would say they have semi crashed. a glut of garbage has held prices down. sure some packs have brought good prices but in general you can not sell anything , especially in volume, for a decent price and you can't consider running an auction on ebay for a pack without taking a bath.

    and many of those packs are suspect, not sure how Brian does it but he gets bidders to leave their senses in the closet

    I can't speak to 60s unopened but 70s unopened has definitely risen in value over last 5 years, particularly cellos and racks, but even wax as well. When I look at my old ebay recepts, I was definitely getting 70s unopened for noticeably lower prices than today. The only exception is on jumbo cello packs from 1970-1973, as the glut of bogus grocery cellos put a real damper on those.

    Edit to add: I'm referring to legit 70s unopened

    .prices are markedly lower for the junk as more and more collectors learn who to avoid.

    Tim, Larry's collection was primarily pre-73. He had loads of the legit jumbo cellos which are much cheaper , loads of the racks which rarely sell these days from the early 70's. Then there was tons of 60's and late 50's. any 50's and 60'stuff that is sold at auction these days will go considerably cheaper that what it did when larry sold out.

    The buyers aren't there and the newbies that come in look at ebay and all the christmas crap and think that is what things should sell for. then they realized they were had and walk away, it is a tough environment for this stuff right now. most legit stuff doesn't come to market because there is no reason to sell at this point.

    70's stuff is about the same from what I have seen except 71 wax which is 1/2 of what it used to sell for, 73's seem weak as well. the cheaper stuff seems to have gone up as it is more for ripping now than for the packs and provides a cheap source of entertainment and fun

    I just wish I could still buy 79 rack boxes for 350 and 77 racks for 45 per...and 75 racks for 150, too, lol..Prices for unopened product from 72-79 is definitely higher now than back then, and my collection consists of packs from 1969-1979 so perhaps my perspective is more positive because of that.

    I have stacks of 77s that came from vending and wax boxes, picked up for 125 vending (even came from Dave and Adams, no less) and 150 for wax. Back then it was cheap enough to bust. Would never do that at today's prices.

    Have to agree with Grote, at least on post-75 material, prices have climbed considerably, I'd say by at least 50%.

    I agree that many people are holding out for prices on vintage to go up. Larry was correct on prices dropping...., he and I just disagreed on whether the market for vintage would ever recover. I thought (and think) that it will. I am not selling unoepned, but then again, not buying much unopened either.

    Shue 4040... I would not buy those racks. Tough to tell from pictures as none are close up of the cellophnae, a dead give away on '71 Racks--it looks very brittle--these do not.

    Hard to tell from scan but cello wrap looks a bit too bright and clean to me. Also hard to tell if it has the correct double seam Topp used on racks through 73.

    I looked at that 1969 rack pack closely and it does look like it has the correct double seam, but that doesn't mean the end section wasn't opened on the top and resealed with the Clemente showing. If the scan was better, we could tell for sure, but it ias possible the rack pack is good.

    After watching what 70s star cello packs are commanding of late, I don't think there's any question that the value of 70s unopened has risen significantly over the last few years. It's a healthy market right now for authentic product.

    just wanted to go back to this thread due to my comments on a '69 rack with Clemente showing that was on the Bay a few weeks back. I went to the Shriners show in Beantown and met the seller--dropthepuck. I had spoken to another knowledgeable board member who knew him and vouched for his connections to unopened material and his credibility.

    I looked at the Clemente rack and came away with mixed emotions. The cello was in fact brittle but it looked a little inconsistent to me. Not to say it is not legit of course, just that I wouldn't buy it.

    Nevertheless I looked at quite a bit of drop's product and was highly impressed--even the raw stuff.

    I just wanted to clarify my prior comments and did not want in any way to taint or question drop's reputation.

    Oh yeah and.....Holy crap does he have some nice stuff!!

    Really? That really surprises me. Obviously I haven't kept up with supply over the past 20 years but i had always assumed the 59 FB would be fairly common since the 59 BB was not that difficult to find.


    Thank-you for all your comments. The main thing I wanted to try and collect early on was to try and get an unopened box and pack for each year in FB and BB.
