I scraped a bunch of proof sets today for this.

I felt a little guilty as I know they are going to the pot. But look at what i got for them. I have a Flowing Hair, Seated, and Trade but never one of these until now.

Getting your first Bust dollar is always a thrill. If this is your first early coin, it's an even bigger thrill.

AND it is a little scrarcer than usual. The date most often see is the 1799. The 1803 is a little special.

Thanks everyone. It is in a NGC holder as you can tell. I have to say the clarity of the new NGC holders is really good. They graded it VF25.

I would appreciate if someone could attribute it for me. I do not own the book for this series. Thanks

I wouldn't feel guilty if I had made that trade-off. Wonderful coin!
  • I really like that particular example! Nice trade. The proof sets were made by the million so don't feel bad for them at all, it just helps the survivors.

It looks to be a Bolender 5, (.k.a. BB-252), which is the second most common 1803 variety. The estimated population according to Bowers is 500 to 950 pieces.

Nice! And I know the feeling of acquiring that first example of an early type coin that requires some sacrifice. I felt like a kid with his first rookie card of Roger Maris, when I got my 1807 dime. image
BTW, I hope that you didn't scrape your proof sets, even if you were scrapping them. image

I'll attribute the Draped Bust dollar if you will afford me 1st crack at that 1795 that I've seen here. image

tyedye, you have Bowers/Borckardt-252, Bolender-5, Haseltine-5. Small, thin top 3, positioned too high. QDB assigned a URS-10 ranking in VF-20 to EF-45. (275 to 550 survivors in this range). The key to note here: Many DB dollars are in holders, but may have been boinked before the new technology came about to detect covert alterations. If you're comfy that you have an unaltered example, you done good.

Yes, when the price of silver bullion goes down in real (adjusted for inflation) or absolute terms, that coin will hold its value.

I really like the look of that coin. Back when I was collecting type, I wished I could own an 1803 dollar, but all that ever seemed to be available were the 1799s...as someone already pointed out. You scored, congrats.

  • Oh gee I'd say you did rather well there Mike! That is a very attractive coin and one can only imagine that the plastic alone from the requisite number of proof sets must have made a respectable pile!

    As a comparison
The 1803 DBD comes in 2 major varieties, the small and the large 3.
Yours is the small 3 variety. Here is my large 3 variety as a comp.

That was a no brainer. A bunch of modern stuff for a 1803 dollar! You must have had a "BUNCH" of proof sets!
  • bosco5041bosco5041 Posts: 1,303
You sold all of your proof sets for a dollar?????????image
  • tydyetydye Posts: 3,894 ✭✭✭
It was a combination of US proof sets and foreign proof sets - at least US is one fineness. The foreign stuff was all over the place 999, 925, 900, 800, 500. I had to look each up in Krause and then remove from the packaging and separate by fineness in order to sell them. I am glad to get rid of the bulk though. I filled a trash can with all the cases.
