Looks like some sort of die bump or die gouge.

    Is it recessed or raised?

If it's recessed then it could be PMD or some sort of strike through. Raised then maybe a die chip or die gouge, but I usually associate them with accompanying die cracks.

Looks like a die gouge or a partial dropped letter.

Interesting... looks like a small i, but could be a gouge, maybe Fred Weinberg will chime in.. Cheers, RickO

It's a commonly seen die clash from the area of the rear legs on the reverse and from a more or less properly aligned die. Note the slight "mask" at the eye-this is a clash of the field below the Bison's belly.

The remnants of "E PLURIBUS UNUM" can also be seen under the chin. This was at one time known as the "Lettered Chin" or "Chin Whiskers" die clash.

It's die clash. There are other dates that show this as well. Don't let it keep you from buying it.

Nice buffalo. I would think die gouge. A clash would be more widespread

    Die clash...
The bitterness of "Poor Quality" is remembered long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.
