<< <i>TDN, sounds to me like you are making an offer for coins you'd like to add to your collection.
Sort of a different kettle of fish than coins a dealer is looking to resell, I'd say. >>

Not at all - don't you think that Legend has at least a handful of other collectors just like me and could broker the same sort of deal with most any significant coin? Besides - you don't address the main point.

I repeat - its not about the bids - its about opportunity. >>

I understand your point, but the counter-argument is that raising bids creates opportunity.
You just have to raise them enough.

It might - but as I said before its counterproductive - because even if you raise bids you aren't going to shake many coins loose. And what you've done is create resistance in buyers for all the coins that you would have gotten anyway at the lower levels. As a dealer, you cut your own throat.

It's probably a bit of both. There is always a number that works. Just depends how high you are really willing to go.

I wonder if Laura buys dreck, slaps on a CAC sticker and then sells a gem?image >>

brought some Morgan DMPLs from legend .. top of the line quality >>

Legend is one of the few dealers i have been doing business with and will continue to do business for as long as i live. They know the quality i like, and will tell me in advance if i even want to look at a coin, and Laura has saved me from making many mistakes in the past as well.We may not always agree, but i will take her advice along with a few select others any day of the week.Just my 2 cents!image
Great coins are not cheap, and cheap coins are not great!

We are talking about a thin slice of the market here.

At a macro level, raising bids will shake tons of thing loose. Just not the market niche they serve.

Interestingly, this also applies to thinly traded cheap stuff. Once a specialist latches on to it, they won't sell. You can put out a buy ad for lots of money (just like TDN did here) and it won't work.
  • Have they ever tough about offering rare Canadian coins to the U.S market. Canada has some of the lowest mintage and rare coins that are still affordable. Like say the 1921 50 cent known as the King of Canadian coins with about 50 known and only 3 mint state known starts at 40 000$ and goes up to close to 1$ million dollars in MS-67.

I have not found many nice coins for the last four years. The last coin I bought was May of 2011, and that was my only purchase for the year. Attractive, Unc. pre 1835 material is very scarce. It has been for years. Unc. Copper from Classic Large Cents prior even moreso.

I don't know where this material is. Whenever I see a nice type coin of this era, I think people are asking too much for it, so I pass. I don't know where it goes. Maybe it gets sold to someone else, or maybe it just goes unsold for an extended period of time. Some of it could stay in dealer inventory of some dealers whom I ignore because their prices start at absurd and go up from there (Legend is NOT one of them) and then quietly get wholesaled or to an auction house.

The sad fact of the matter is by the time anything nice which I collect gets to the bourse floor of a show, it has been marked up so much that it doesn't make sense to buy it. I'm not a big enough fish to get first shot at new material; the people that do are the ones who get the nice coins. Most of us, however, either pay to much or pass.

I am not looking at material which is so scarce, that I know who has what. There is no reason for me to pay multiples of sheet for the coins I seek. So in the interim, I'll pass.
