Obverse has very nice detail...perhaps 45 if the luster is there (hard to tell from photo). Reverse is not as nice as the obverse, so I would say a solid XF40. Looks like it may have been cleaned at some point. Nice coin though! Regards, Dan
I going with EF 40, nice coin. I would probably go 45 if not for the weak spots. Love those bust coins,I don't see how anyone could go wrong these days with early bust coins.
<< <i>Very nice Choice XF Just not quite all there for an AU grade. Looks like she has been cleaned but would still pass the smell test.
edited to add - if that is an XYZ slab then it probably says XF40 because ..... well just because. >>
Looks like my 35 guess was a little closer to the mark than your almost AU guess. >>
Looks like PCGS undergraded it and you were just further off the mark than they were. Besides, there is a big difference between XF and VF and Choice XF is 45 by the way. As for those DBH's that you have for sale.....
The 1805 half dollars were struck with dies that had far stronger detail than those used for most of the 1806 and '07 pieces. For that reason the coin appears to be sharper than its true grade would indicate. This piece is very attractive, but it is really an EF-40, nothing higher.
As to originality, I think the coin was lightly cleaned many years ago and has toned over. Your coin is a very nice example, but the surfaces are a bit too light to be what I would call original. Original silver coins of this vintage are usually darker. I don't have a half dollar of this type that would illustrate this, but I do have a couple silver dollars and half dimes.
1800 half dime - This coin is actually an AU, but NGC net graded it as an EF-45 because of scratches.
1797 half dime, 15 stars, NGC AU-53
1802 silver dollar. This one is an AU-58, but the "look" is the type of thing that many collectors view as original.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Grade xf45.
No idea of value.

I'm guessing better lighting may make the surfaces look better, as I suspect it looks nice in hand.

Possibly cleaned.
value $1300-$1800 xf range

I have 200 of them for $5 each.
I agree that it was probably overdipped in the past, but that's strong detail. I'd say 45-50, too.
<< <i>I think the images aren't helping the eye appeal of this coin. >>
The eye appeal is what it is. The images may not be helping the perception of the eye appeal.
