What was your "Goal" when you started your "Certified" core collection?

Did you start as a hole filler, and then upgrade as time and money allowed.
Did you have a set grade for each coin in the collection and only purchase at that grade?
Just wondering out loud.

For the past 40+ years I've been after every type coin there is.

Grade wise, I went for the best I could afford. The lowest grade coin is a 1796 half dollar in Fine 15. I really wanted a VF, but that has not come my way. As for the rest, a couple VFs (1796 Quarter, 1793 Chain cent), the rest AU to PR-70 Ultra Cam.

After a few entry pieces read and researched a lot and bought semi and key dates in optimum grades then filled in with common dates but always kept a lookout for needed dates/varieties but I never upgrade

A 1793-1839 US type set. No specific grade, just choice for whatever grade it is.

As a newcomer to the Coin collecting world I "Plan" on getting an early Silver Dollar preferably 1798-1799 in F to VF as I think it would be great to own a coin minted in the 1700's, after I secure one I will get a Trade Dollar, early Half and a nice example of a Barber Half ALL in a PCGS Holders preferably VF condition. That is my primary Goal, after that I will continue to buy a 75/25% ratio of Morgans and Odd Silver Bars and Rounds.

The biggest thorn in my side is trying to decide if I will do the Early Silver Dollar or go with a Massachusetts piece from the 1700's, that will be my biggest purchase and the key Coin in my Collection.

Investment wise Im not sure which of the two would be a better route, I would appreaciate any input.

My goal for the Mercury Dime Complete Varieties was as high MS grades as possible, prefer FB, prefer Top Pop and beyond that...just find them all. I am closing in on 2 years and I have a number of them left to find with a few needing upgrades......and then PCGS will likely add a few to the set this month or next due to the latest CPG thereby making completion just a little more difficult. All in due time! Patience is a virtue...I just wish I had more patience.

I want to put together the best looking set in a grade range acceptable to me but within my budget. I feel I am accomplishing that goal.

The original goal was a circulation strike set of Peace dollars in MS63 or higher grades. I've gradually upgraded this set about as far as my means will allow. My entire certified collection now lives in PCGS plastic. I sold my last NGC coin last week and successfully crossed the others. The set is pretty well balanced with one exception. The ugly duckling needs to be swapped for a better example and one coin still needs an upgrade. I'll probaby add the odd upgrade to the set over time, but there really isn't too much room to improve without climbing the very steep part of the price / scarcity curve.

I'm branching out now into type coins and my interests are moving gradually to early US coins and classic gold.

What grade is your Silverware Disme?

As for me, my goal has remained the same. 1916 Mint Set with Gold in MS grades.

"Way back when", when I set my mind on completeing a certified Morgan Dollar Set I aimed for a MS63 for my grade of choice. As many of these were very cheap, my collection grew rapidly. As I started getting to the more expensive dates/mints I added the best grade before the big jump in price to the next level that I could afford at that time.

Later on I began upgrading those common 63`s a step or so. Content with many at their new respective grade, I then focused on upgrading the tougher dates and filtering the monies generated from sales of the lesser grade slab to help with the new purchase.

I have also sold off much of my duplicates and bullion which did help me too. I built up my Paypal account, made a new purchase then sold off the lower grade slab with that money going right back into my PP.

It will be a long endeavor as I have reached a level, for me, that each purchase now is a little tougher to "find" the money for that certain upgrade. Kinda something that could turn out to keep me busy for years to come.

Started most of my stuff with dansco albums. Now I have recollected my graded coins have been new purchases from my favorite album set coins. The graded stuff is always evolving. I chose of few of my sets for top notch registry caliber stuff. Other graded coins are just for fun in the series I like.

Craziest color roosie set I could find, minimum of MS 67 --- avoided anything brilliant/not pretty even if they were higher graded.

Gold type set, finding the "sweet spot" just before the price difference in grades goes rapidly upward. For example, Saint Gaudens $20s have an ounce of gold, worth right now just a hair over $1700. (By the time you read this, it'll probably be more.) Saints in MS63 go for about $2000 and 64 for $2100, only $100 more. If I'm spending over two thousand bucks for a coin, then, all factors equal and assuming all coins are typical median for their grade, I'm going to spend that five percent more to get the better grade. At MS65, they're $2500 for a common date, about 150% their bullion worth. At MS66 they jump to $3700, over 200%. So, the sweet spot would be MS65.

When I started the "Certified" phase of my coin collecting addic.... er hobby I was intending to complete a Registry set of circulated Lincolns cents '09 to 'present'. I eventually lost interest in that pursuit.
Now other areas of collecting are calling to me primarily raw type, slabbed type, circ gold, ancients, and wheat cents.
I hope to find my focus in the next 5 -10 years.

The goal for my core collection of Dahlonega gold coins (which was begun prior to PCGS's founding) is to complete a set (at least 58 coins) of Dahlonega gold, focusing not on a specific grade, but on a certain "look." I'm doing it slowly, hoping to acquire coins with genuine character and charm.
