Poll: What do you enjoy more about collecting? The hunt, the find, or the ownership?

Pretty straightforward.

Do you enjoy most the thrill of the hunt and the challenges to overcome to find that just right, special coin?

Do you enjoy most that moment when you actually find that elusive coin?

Or...Do you enjoy most those evenings where you have your coins all out in display as you study over every nook and cranny?

I enjoy the "find" the most because I never know what I will find as I mainly collect unique error coins.

I love finding something that I never knew existed.

Owning unique coins that no one else can is also very enjoyable.

I get the most thrill out of the hunt. The anticipation ends with the find, and when you own the find, it just sits in the dark somewhere.

The HUNT, the find and the ownership is okay, but certainly not what it is all about!

    I voted ownership. image

  • The adreniline gets pumping those last few seconds of an auction for sure and that's never equaled again , but it's all about the ownership for me , the long winter nights by the fire magnifying glass and coins in hand.
  • The hunt is fun, but honestly it's about the 'find' for me hands down. It's finding the item and making the purchase that by far and away adds fuel to the fire for me image

Ownership. The hunt can be frustrating at times.

Definitely the hunt - since I'm not filling holes anymore, there is no "elusive coin" anymore. image

The find makes the hunt worthwhile... Yesterday I accidentally stumbled across an item I desperately wanted and was outbid on 4 years ago.

<< <i>All 3, and I find it hard separating them. why hunt it if the find isn't as enjoyable, why find it if the ownership isn't as enjoyable. All 3 are equally thrilling and that is the reason that I collect. In addition the research or education inorder to start the hunt is also equally as enjoyable to me. >>

I actually enjoy the documentation the most. I keep a detailed Excel chart and I also wrote it up on paper in December. Also the scanning, editing and uploading comes into play here too. I guess that would be a subcategory of ownership, because you can't document what you don't have, as a general rule.

I wish I had more to document, actually. I have picked up the nickname "The Mad Documenter"

Ownership. Can't be the hunt, because I've got lots of other things I'd rather be doing with my time than
looking through haystacks for needles, but it's a necessary means to an end. The find is a great feeling,
but ownership is also great and lasts far longer.

I love the hunt and am thrilled when I find what I want.
But knowing I now own what I wanted is what it is all about.

The find. Since I have been on the hunt for Mercury Dime Varieties for 1.5 years now the hunt has beaten me up a bit...trying to find all 26 that PCGS has given their blessing to is not easy. Sure it is fun a good majority of the time but THE FIND is an amazing thrill. Especially when it is a Cherrypick and your pulse quickens etc. A great find is a huge rush!

The find. Oddly, sometimes the very items I get excited about finding are forgotten over time. Sometimes I'll be going through a drawer or even opening the safety deposit box and "find" an item again.

    Hoard the keys.
  • I voted for the "ownership," although the three are intertwined.

If the desired coin is elusive, the "hunt" can be both fun and frustrating. If the hunt is challenging, the "find" is equally thrilling. A challenging hunt and thrilling find make the joy of ownership more intense. Often the hunt and find become part of the coin's "backstory."

The ownership can only be enjoyed by me if I find it. I can only appreciate the find if I hunt for it. And the hunt begins by visiting my girls at the bank. So you tell me which part you think I enjoy the most.

The hunt is hard on my eyes. The find is hard on my heart. The ownership is hard on my wallet.
I chose ownership as the most enjoyable. My wallet can't feel much when it's empty.

Ownership... the hunt and the find are interesting, but owning the coin is pleasurable. Cheers, RickO
  • I went with The Find.
The hunt is fun, but irritating when you can't find.
Ownership is great, but everything is for sale (eventually), sometimes immediately after a great find.

I have to say that I don't really enjoy the hunt. When I can't find a coin that I need for years, it really gets on my nerves. And while the evantual "find" provides a sense of relief, I also associate it with the pain of actually having to pay for the coin. Now ownership on the other hand is great. It provides me with a sense of pride and accomplishment that I can appreciate visually, over and over again.

Others have pointed out that the "find" provides an adrenaline rush. I get my adrenaline rush from my other hobby, playing poker.

For me it's ownership and studying the pieces I have. The hunt can be fun for while, but when the hunt goes on for too long it gets to be a drag. .

I've been looking for a suitable 1796 No Stars Quarter eagle for two years, and it has ceased to be fun. The frustrating part is that three or fours years ago, when I could not afford the coin, they were available at almost every major show. Now there is nothing but culls, a massively over priced (IMO) variety, and problem coins. I'm starting wonder now if I will ever find it.

At any given time, my favorite of the three is the one that I am doing at that moment.

All three are great and all three have benefits.

That being said, the moment of the find is special [the dawning of awareness of what you have found; the increased heart rate; the second take to verify the accuracy of your first impression; the effort required to maintain a poker face/calm demeanor whilst you solicit a price, come to an agreement, pay your money and take possession of your new coin; the elation/euphoria of waking out of the shop/bourse/auction; and sitting down in solitude to examine your new coin in detail for the first time and marvel at its attributes].

An example this happened recently when I discovered an example of the valuable 1961 DDR proof half dollar in a proof set I had bought.

Ownership is great because you can, any time you want to, pull out your coin(s) to study and enjoy.

The hunt is great because you meet new people; you go to new places; you spend time away from the daily grind [unless you make your living in the hobby]; and you can anticipate that you will succeed in finding what you are hunting for.

I've always said "the hunt" was the best part. But "the find" is where the adrenaline rush comes from since I only buy one or two coins per year.

I too LOVE the hunt..... The searching.... The wandering eyes.... The desire for that crescendo of pleasure that is the culmation of that hunt!!!

Which is the ECSTASY of the find!!!! The wedding night (so to speak in purer times)..

And then the "ownership" of course... Which is the long term satisfaction, contentment and security of knowing that this object of our desire is 'ours'.... And, it is unique and beautiful....

And then it is often placed out and away, only to be brought out, enjoyed and appreciated on those cold dark winter evenings, to be gazed at by the warm glow of the fire light....image
