Indian cent newp from FUN - try and guess the grade. (Answer posted).

I have a hard time guessing the grade on 1877's as the TPG's tend to be generous with this date. Can you guess the grade on this one?? Hint - PCGS. image

Tough to grade. Is it AU58?? Don't know, but it sure is nicer than 95% of the 1877 AU58's I've seen over the years.

Looks 53 and had been subject to an old cleaning to me, but since it's holdered I'm likely wrong about the cleaning.

  • XF45. Looks nice and original. Lots of luster. Only the feathers look weak.

    55 to me
  • 45 was my first thought, but since you said they were generous with the grade, must be a 50-55.

tough picture, but looks like a lot of luster left. I'm thinking 55?

I would say they called it MS63RB, but it's Fly-In club grade would be XF-40, since the strike is abysmal. Value about $3500 for the coin, boost to $4000 for the holder premium (If it is MS63RB) - right around Grey Sheet bid.

If it were fully struck with full diamonds and feather tips, it would be worth nearly twice as much.

    Rick:

Appreciate the comments. When I was collecting IHC's MS65-67 red, it was hard to find full strike/feather tips too. image

Definitely not my series, but appears to have too much wear for an AU designation, so I'll go XF4X.

Here's the full feather 3.25 diamond definition you can expect on a $50,000 1877. image

Going from that pic the grade of AU58 seems exceptionally generous to me. That coin appears to have plenty of wear on all the high points on both obv. and rev. and the original lustre appears long gone for the most part. And this takes into account the strike may not have been bold to begin with.

Without looking at the posted grade and picture of the slab, I guessed AU55.
