How would you grade and value this 1797 large cent?

Yes it has some corrosion but of all the early large cents ive owned this would be the highest grade/most details remaining. The corrosion doesnt bother me in the least and everytime I look at it I just marvel at how cool it is to have something so old with complete remaining detail. So how would you guys/girls grade this one out? I'm also curious about the price I paid, if I got a decent deal or not. I feel I did ok. What do others feel this piece would be properly priced at? Thanks!
Coin appears slightly darker then it really is.

VF-20 sharpness, net graded to VG-10 IMO for pits resulting from corrosion.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I have not bought a large cent in sometime but I would say it is worth $230.08. If you like the coin it is worth the extra bucks that you may have paid and my opinion is not needed. Those pre-1800 dates are just too tough in better grades. Large cents are large cents- copper is copper-unfortunately, problem-free is not what most of the early dates are. I like it.
I do not know what the Sheldon no. is, so i am valuing it on date alone- Could be a variety that is worth more-perhaps a Sheldon expert will give you some help.

I would figure it would retail more like $325 to $450, even with the corrosion. It's a common die variety, so no premium there, but 1797 cents have risen in value in recent years.

He could dip it in "electroless nickel" plating solution and make it nice & shiny white in a few minutes, if desired. image

VF-30 or so sharpness, net graded to VG-8 or 10 due to the corrosion.

  • Looks dug and cleaned ... but still a cool piece.
