Not everyone here is a dealer. Many good collector members here want to maintain their anonymity for security reasons and if they would be required to divulge their name, they would elect not to join here. With the internet it's not too hard to find where someone lives if you have their name.

The really caustic contributors usually leave the forum rather quickly. The OF certainly did have the worst of the worst for a while, though most of them were not really coin collectors. The anonymity of the internet allows many to be bullies, the hidden part of their psyche that is never shown in public, just as school yard bullies do not act out when in the presence of stronger individuals. These are all good thoughts, but so far, everyone has missed one more important element:
SOME PEOPLE THRIVE ON CONFLICT!
It took me many years to realize this. I just thought they were grouchy or mistreated as children or grew up in front of computer screens (which may also be true), but some people are actually addicted to the drama and adrenaline associated with living in the center of a maelstrom. Pain, angst, anger--they just wouldn't know what to do without it, just like an alcoholic can't live without booze. I've encountered such people everywhere, including right here on the boards, and even married one of them a long time ago! Gradually, I learned to avoid them.
The beginning of the exchange by Jane Curtin was great in and of itself (had more substance than our POTUS debates these days) , but you found yourself salivating for that great opening line by Murray.
The recurring sketch was based on the 'Point/Counterpoint' with Jack Kirkpatrick and Shana Alexander that was a regular feature in the early days of '60 Minutes'.
For the topic: There are a lot of human beings who simply are not aware of, or choose to ignore, the old guidance 'If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all'.

Perhaps caustic original posts tend to beget caustic replies?
What Tom said.
I've never understood why people start threads asking for opinions and are promptly shocked when they *gasp* get opinions. If they're only interested in opinions that agree with theirs, they should state so in the OP; it will save others a lot of time.
Rightly or wrongly, I'm certainly no stranger to "mixing it up" here- but it's never unsolicited... For instance, anyone starting a "B&M dealers are crooks" thread can expect me to weigh in. In fact they can count on it. If that's considered caustic, so be it; I don't suffer insults or generalized/exaggerated stereotypes very well when they are made about the business in which I have made a living for nearly three decades. Sorry if that offends anyone.
It should also be mentioned that other internet forums besides coins usually have caustic forumites as well. Try reading some online forums dedicated to sports teams (for aggressive caustic forumites) or internet poker (for broke caustic forumites) for a real eye opener. There's something about anonymity behind a computer (as mentioned above) that brings out the very worst in people. It's analogous to "anonymity behind a windshield" that brings out the worst in aggressive drivers, except there is added security behind a computer because the person can't be touched or identified easily.
If you want real caustic dialogue, try some of the gun forums.. particularly those for a specific brand. Then watch what happens if someone denigrates that brand. Or when someone asks a simple question (even a newbie trying to learn).. unbelievable. That is not to say there are not civil and valuable gun forums, there are, and I choose to frequent those. A shipment arrived late Saturday afternoon at the FUN Show. I bought two, in order to fill the holes in my ASE albums, just before I left the show.

Not only conflict, but competition. A good part of that competition is fostered by our host and their Registry.
