Had to sell my coin collection 2 weeks ago..

My car died, it blew a head gasket was a 97 mercury with 180k on it..Found a great deal. a 2008 grand marquis with 39k on it.
one problem, I needed a down payment. After agonizing over it, i decided to empty the safe deposit box and take it all to a b &m shop.
I have known the guy fir a few years and he seems pretty trustworthy. He starts saying, 'wow, I wouldn't sell some of these". i almost changed my mind. Out comes the gray sheet...he's making offers and we are writing them down. I did haggle a little more on some and he wouldn't budge on others.
My prize was a 1867 2 cents pcgs ms 64 rb..I also was starting to build a ms 65 walker set 41-45 I was 1/2 way thru it. Some silver mint sets. some slabbed franklins, and a bunch of circulated silver. my 32 s quarter. I kept the 32d (g4) and a ms set of war nickles in a capital holder.
i am sad i sold them. i bought some of the walkers from a member here (jccarney). It took a few years (10) to get them together.
i manged to get enough for the downpayment and also pay off a credit card.

Glad to hear it worked out though, often times Numismatics and silver are fairly liquid ways to "store" money, if not make it.

Look at it this way, brother. It's helping you to get back on your feet so it can't be all bad.
If you had invested in an xbox and a bunch of games (to name an option) a few years ago, I'm guessing you would have been lucky to get much at all for it.
Hope things start picking up again for you soon!

I remember an old FurryFreak Brothers saying.... let me change it a bit....
A car will get you through times of no coins, better
then coins will get you throught times of no car.
always more out there for you...

You know I was just thinking about that very same saying the other day. I don't remember what brought it to mind but I can still see the poster of Phineas or was it Fearless Frank holding up his index finger and the big hat.

Did you consider a lease?.....many offer zero down programs with decent monthly payments....plus you get the warranty.
I didn't use the bst because i had to decide before I lost the car,
YES IT HURT TO LET THOSE WALKERS GO...this is how the conversation went with my wife:
me ; I really don't want to sell these
wife: we need the money for the down payment, you need a car
me: but I was collecting because someday We can use them for something important.
wife" you mean like getting you a car ???
and yes the car the car is awesome. it floats down the road. I love the big car ride and a v8 is really nice.
No, I didn't ask him to hold them 6 months..I wouldn't have been able to pay it back that quick.
I will never lease, If I'm going to make payments it's not going to "rent" a car..
Can't really afford to collect right now..maybe soon.
I'd have had a hard time liquidating those to buy a car too, unless it was an absolute rip of a deal.
This is coming from someone whose daily driver just turned 201K (I put a fair amount of miles on a vehicle annually) so I'll need to be looking shortly myself... Stinks too, because I like the vehicle but it is starting to have recurring repair issues. I'm looking at driving it through the winter and then I'll see what's out there in the spring. I try to look for a 2-3 year old vehicle with low miles... that way it's still basically a new car yet someone else has eaten the bulk of the depreciation.

My Jefferson Nickel Collection
I have 2 armored Tahoes a 2008 and 2012, the 2008 has over 120k miles with no, and I mean no problems ever. My original run flat tires lasted 90k miles. Now they were modified with a super charger, armor and a few extras but the car is mostly OEM, especially drive train and body. Only ballistic aluminum was added inside.
Congratulate yourself on having the foresight to save coins when others would have drank or spent the monies on momentary pleasures.
You saved your EXPERIENCE in buying coins and your choice in walkers looks very decent indeed. Perhaps you can start up another set in MS-64's which you will find almost as nice and a like cheaper! Then a set of MS-65's and so forth.
You will come back stronger than ever.
