Had to sell my coin collection 2 weeks ago..

My car died, it blew a head gasket was a 97 mercury with 180k on it..Found a great deal. a 2008 grand marquis with 39k on it.
one problem, I needed a down payment. After agonizing over it, i decided to empty the safe deposit box and take it all to a b &m shop.

I have known the guy fir a few years and he seems pretty trustworthy. He starts saying, 'wow, I wouldn't sell some of these". i almost changed my mind. Out comes the gray sheet...he's making offers and we are writing them down. I did haggle a little more on some and he wouldn't budge on others.

My prize was a 1867 2 cents pcgs ms 64 rb..I also was starting to build a ms 65 walker set 41-45 I was 1/2 way thru it. Some silver mint sets. some slabbed franklins, and a bunch of circulated silver. my 32 s quarter. I kept the 32d (g4) and a ms set of war nickles in a capital holder.
i am sad i sold them. i bought some of the walkers from a member here (jccarney). It took a few years (10) to get them together.
i manged to get enough for the downpayment and also pay off a credit card.

You're trying to break all of our hearts? :/

Glad to hear it worked out though, often times Numismatics and silver are fairly liquid ways to "store" money, if not make it.

Look at it this way, brother. It's helping you to get back on your feet so it can't be all bad.

  • I'm sorry to hear of your financial difficulties, and the selling of your collection. If it's of any consolation, you can rebuild your collection. With the poor economy, everything is selling cheaply, so you may be able to pick up a few nice replacement coins in the coming weeks.

Sorry you had to sell, but it looks like you had some nice coins that stood you in good stead during your time of need. Give yourself a pat on the back for making good buying decisions. image

I agree with kaz - you had put your money into a good store of value when times were better for you, and they helped pull you through.
If you had invested in an xbox and a bunch of games (to name an option) a few years ago, I'm guessing you would have been lucky to get much at all for it.
Hope things start picking up again for you soon!

A car will get you through times of no coins, better

You know I was just thinking about that very same saying the other day. I don't remember what brought it to mind but I can still see the poster of Phineas or was it Fearless Frank holding up his index finger and the big hat.

Like another member said, imagine if you blew it on video games, etc. Coins were a good choice. Once you get going you can start buying coins again

  • I'm sorry you had to sell your coins, hope you don't give up collecting though.
  • Good choice my friend. You get on your feet and someday you can get them back. It will be a fresh start into getting new coins. I have had to sell some stuff I owned a few months back to pay some bills that were burying us into the ground. It hurts a little, I won't lie to you. But it is the right move. There will always be another coin you will like.

I think many of us on the forum have had to do the same thing. Believe it or not, the pictures mean a lot. Keep them no matter what. A few years from now it will be '
quite enjoyable to see what you had and hopefully regain some or all of it. Hang in there.

Try the BST first next time....you're much more likely to get retail prices for attractive PCGS coins.

Did you consider a lease?.....many offer zero down programs with decent monthly payments....plus you get the warranty.

  • joecopperjoecopper Posts: 1,195 ✭✭✭
I agree with ricko - do what you gotta and you can always start again
  • he wasn't that far off from gray sheet prices. now value guides he was a bit off.

I didn't use the bst because i had to decide before I lost the car,

YES IT HURT TO LET THOSE WALKERS GO...this is how the conversation went with my wife:
me ; I really don't want to sell these
wife: we need the money for the down payment, you need a car
me: but I was collecting because someday We can use them for something important.
wife" you mean like getting you a car ???

and yes the car the car is awesome. it floats down the road. I love the big car ride and a v8 is really nice.
No, I didn't ask him to hold them 6 months..I wouldn't have been able to pay it back that quick.
I will never lease, If I'm going to make payments it's not going to "rent" a car..

Can't really afford to collect right now..maybe soon.

I can feel your pain; I've had to sell things in years past to keep cars running.
I'd have had a hard time liquidating those to buy a car too, unless it was an absolute rip of a deal.
This is coming from someone whose daily driver just turned 201K (I put a fair amount of miles on a vehicle annually) so I'll need to be looking shortly myself... Stinks too, because I like the vehicle but it is starting to have recurring repair issues. I'm looking at driving it through the winter and then I'll see what's out there in the spring. I try to look for a 2-3 year old vehicle with low miles... that way it's still basically a new car yet someone else has eaten the bulk of the depreciation.

Had to sell most of my bullion and Morgans at the start of this year to replace a car as well. I've already added a bunch of new purchases to replace them and I'm glad I did it now that silver is at $30 and not really doing much I can buy right back in at less then what I sold for, but I still feel your pain. Life goes on and the coin markets still active so don't worry

Did you experience a severe case of nostalgia when you left the coin shop?

The more qualities observed in a coin, the more desirable that coin becomes!

    My Jefferson Nickel Collection

  • That's tuff, but you will rebuild. I am all for American everything, but Ford engines and transmissions are garbage, IMO compared to Mopar or Chevy, just my 2 cents.

I have 2 armored Tahoes a 2008 and 2012, the 2008 has over 120k miles with no, and I mean no problems ever. My original run flat tires lasted 90k miles. Now they were modified with a super charger, armor and a few extras but the car is mostly OEM, especially drive train and body. Only ballistic aluminum was added inside.

You were fortunate and SMART that you didn't by Greek bonds or other complicated and "sure" investments.

Congratulate yourself on having the foresight to save coins when others would have drank or spent the monies on momentary pleasures.

You saved your EXPERIENCE in buying coins and your choice in walkers looks very decent indeed. Perhaps you can start up another set in MS-64's which you will find almost as nice and a like cheaper! Then a set of MS-65's and so forth.

You will come back stronger than ever.
