Seriously, are you just jealous, and those who post like you? I understand someone who differs over types of coins to collect based on personal taste, but seriously, do you really believe these are going to bomb? Really? Basic, fundamental numismatic calculation shows these to be excellent cases for strong performance over the next 3-5 years...and even in the next 6-18 mos.
I really don't get people wanting to come in and bash obvious winners. You're entitled to your opinion, but as I've learned, on these boards respect comes from respect given. And these sets deserve some numismatic respect.

You way understood the mark in making any assumptions about me - my simple statement was to the effect that you guys are rah rah about these Anniversary eagles. What I am also saying is that you guys tend have a "flipper's paradise" of a thread - all is go go and upward from here, right?
The buffs did very well and generally have slumped despite an odd sale here or there that does not follow. As a collector I love my buffs and will hold them just like these.
I just do not agree that these Anniv sets are going to go up regardless - that is not bashing just stating a legit opinion.

I just want a perfect set of 70s. Lost money trying to do so but was wondering if you think the coins will go up in 2 years so I can recooperate my losses then. Or should I just sell the ones I don't need now and continue to do buy resell until I get the coin I want to keep?

I think a lot of people are probably sick of this same argument that's been going on since mid-novemeber...but oh well. It's easy to see trends, and there is a 95% chance these will follow that trend. To say these will go down in value is not a very good education statement...or guess. History speaks for itself, and ultimately, history will speak for these in the next couple years. Personally, I have 2 sealed sets and 2 70 sets. I will hold them, and I am almost certain I will double that investment. I guess we'll see what this thread says in 2014 or 15 or 16

You might not be able to recoop the losses if you swap too many times. Are you buying to collect for the longterm or are you a buying to resell later? Just remember that in general, the "market" doesn't examine these 70s to the extent you do if they have been graded by a reputable third party grader.
If you're looking to collect for the long haul and want absolutely stellar 70s, you might try to hit a show or a place with an actual storefront where you can examine the coins in person before buying. The coins might be more expensive that way but probably not as expensive as buying and reselling online until you get something that pleases you.
Hard to say where prices will be in a few years. Personally, I wouldn't sell any of the keys at least right now--barring some sort of financial hardship--but that's just me.
My two cents...

Yeah I know , been trying to get one. I'm actually going for keeps. I have extras but those I don't plan to sell until 3 years or so from now (depending on market though) to fund my next coin collection. Speaking of which, still not sure whether or not to keep the 69 set. Had someone tell me they collect 69s because they have the whole series and it's cheaper that way, which makes sense since the other ASE are probably extremely expensive in the 70 grade.
So far I have the following in perfect 70s:
2011-P x3 (outside the hair but it definitely is not a scratch on the sun. The white hair reflects off the sun and at an angle it's definitely not on the coin) 2011-W x1 2011-W P x1
I was SOOO close to the no mint one for perfect 70 but there was one scratch on the edge of the coin =. Normally it wouldn't bother me but you can see it if you rotate the slab against the light because it "glows" brighter than what's around the scratch. Yup, I have rolls and rolls for silver coins that have done very well over the last 15 years. But, you are talking about recent trends. I am sure your main focus, whatever than might be (funny you don't say so people can tell if you are just blowing smoke) is DOWN and are not doing anywhere close to what this sets have done since they were issued. Most people on here believe they will do well in the future. If you want to sit on the sidelines and watch, go right ahead. It may be a good move on your part and may not. It is your decision.
Why don't you start a thread about you main focus of interest and see what people have to say about it, where it is going, recent trends, etc. I sold my sealed sets and bought graded sets to keep. Will I sell them someday? Maybe but I have no plans at this point. I do hope they increase in value just like EVERYONE hopes their main focus of interest will. To say differently is rather goofy.
As for stating a different opinion, I don't believe people care either way. It is how you state your opinion that makes or breaks it.
I believe your main focus will remain flat (unless they are based on PM) through the current economy but I wish you well in the future.
It is always good to have some dissenters when so many people think one way. Sometimes these threads can get into a group-think mode.
@Absolution--many folks, I think a lot of folks collect moderns in 69 because they are still stellar coins (I have examined many PCGS 69 25ths and they look GREAT!) Granted you will get a few of those shiny spots when you tilt the coin in the light, etc---but you do not have to pay the much higher prices for them (considering the difference between a 69 and 70 almost seems to be by the flip of the coin--sorry for the bad pun!)

I just got a notification from PCGS that my 5 25th sets have been graded. I got 1 complete set of 70's but only one complete set of 69s! That wasn't expected.

The advantage alos in buying 69s is the fact hat if the coins do indeed take off in price you can always crack them out and attempt for a 70. This is only feasible if the coin does increase in price quite a bit but it is definitely an option. Play the TPGs and if PCGS gave you a 69 send it ATS and maybe you get a 70. It may not go for as much as a PCGS coin but a 70 is quite a increase in price anyways
Thanks for the feedback. I think I'm going to buy another 70 set so I have 3 full 70s and sell the 69 set; just in case I have more than 2 kids in the future so I have 1 for each kid when they grow up. If not, can always sell it in the future anyway but don't plan on letting coins go. Really starting to appreciate the designs, just purchased a 2011 Chinese Panda Gold coin PCGS 70 not sure what the GEM stands for but will research that when I get back. PS: That coin looks gorgeous.

There sure seems to be a lot of single coin auctions being cancelled on the two keys. No doubt someone is picking these up o/s eBay to get a better price.
Since the 2 sets I submitted didn't grade well with only 1 70 in the bunch, I ended up with 2 69 sets. I did ok on the sealed sets as I got early shipments and sold them quick on ebay. These 2 sets are the gravy. I'm just going to sit on them and see what happens.

They might. Also keep in mind that if there is ever a longterm price disparity you can have Tombstones or Mercantis First Strikes reholdered as Flags. >>
To add to the quote above ..... But you can never reverse it back from Flag Label back to Mercanti...
It would be interesting to see the breakout of the 3 different labels--just how many were Mercantis, versus, Tombstones, versus Flags--at one point, the Mercantis might actually be the rare(r) label. Especially if some have been reholdered already.
<< <i>I'm sure this discussion has been had elsewhere but in a generation are people really going to care about the label more then the rating? >>
Yes, the label horse has been beaten to death several times. IMOP, had the Mercantis signature label been a special thing just for the 25 Anniversary set, it may have made a difference and commanded a premium. However, it seems he is signing more and more coin labels (and making money to do it) which I believe will kill the goose. As I said from the start, I wish PCGS would have just stuck with their normal FS Flag Label (which may not mean a thing to the next generation) and been happy with the $$ it generates for them.

Here is a "2007 W John Mercanti Autographed Silver Eagle"
So, are these signature labels on newly graded coins or has he been signing them for years? He was appointed as the Chief Engraver in 2006 yet there is a 1986 and a 2001 ASE on eBay with his signature.
Anyway, reviewing completed ebay sales for pcgs 70, I don't see anymore $1150 - $1200 pcsgs sets, especially in Mercanti label, prices seemed to have moved up into the $1300 _ $1500 range, so that's good, I'm holding a couple of 70 sets hoping the price goes up like a lot of people said it would.

<< <i> IMOP, had the Mercantis signature label been a special thing just for the 25 Anniversary set, it may have made a difference and commanded a premium. However, it seems he is signing more and more coin labels (and making money to do it) which I believe will kill the goose. >>
What other coin labels is he signing?

2007 Mercanti Silver Eagles, etc. you can find a few actually on eBay still but they aren't really selling for a premium

That's right. I remember there was a 2012 dated ASE with his signature. i just didn't see it with my cursory review.
<< <i>Anyway, reviewing completed ebay sales for pcgs 70, I don't see anymore $1150 - $1200 pcsgs sets, especially in Mercanti label, prices seemed to have moved up into the $1300 _ $1500 range, so that's good, I'm holding a couple of 70 sets hoping the price goes up like a lot of people said it would. >>

<< <i>He is even signing 2009 UHRs for cool $8K Linky >>
So if you want to get a UHR graded or a sealed ASE set, you can request and pay extra for a Mercanti label?
Just looked at a submission form and see no place to mark label type...seriously considering sending in a very nice UHR to grade and would like one of those sigs on it!

I think you have to be one of the special people to get that label.
Hard to find now, the few on ebay are being snapped up for $1495.

I have 9 of them I would sell for $3000 each. Maybe time to start a BIN auction.

Mercanti 69 sets are available for about half the price of Mercanti 70 sets. A better value IMO.
