Maybe the charity aspect of that particular auction led to the higher price as even a sealed single set only fetched less than $719 early today.

Three more at $700+ since your original post, all non-charity, auctions at $700 and $701, and a BIN at $725. Looks like at least some progress from the low $600s of a week ago.

Also saw a First Strike eligible sealed box of 5 go for $3,750 best offer, which is $750 per set.

Saw the $3750 sale, does not appear to be a us mint box.

Boy, he sure states that it is:

"You are looking at 5 SETS! UNOPENED! 2011 AMERICAN EAGLE 25th ANNIVERSARY SILVER COIN SET (A25) This listing is for FIVE(5) 2011 American Eagle 25th Anniversary 5 Coin SETS in the ORIGINAL UNOPENED US Mint shipment box, as shown in photo."

Who ever bought it is going to be disappointed big time.

  • << <i> My 2001 Capital Visitor is about $1800 book value. Try and sell it. Dealers on these boards will only pay $600. >>

Then sell it on eBay. I watched a raw example close for $1500 about a month and a half ago.

    << <i> My 2006 platinum $25 PCGS 70 will only get offers of $550. >>

If you're talking about the standard business strike than that makes sense as there are only a handful of platinum eagle collectors, and even fewer who collect the business strikes. Comparing such a niche collecting market to ASE collecting is a bit of an apples and oranges comparison.

<< <i>Look up their mintages. WELL below 10,000. Yet the 25th sets are 100,000?!! To the moon Alice. REALLY? >>

Again, more apples to oranges... A more accurate comparison would be the 250,000 20th anniversary sets to the 25th sets, or 30,000,000+ regular 2011 ASEs vs the 100,000 25th sets made.

Didn't look that closely when I was browsing the completed listings. Yikes! Looks nothing like a U.S. Mint shipping box, and AFAIK they don't stick orange labels on them to denote an enclosed packing list.

    Another great listing...

Note the time to sell out and that the seller states that each of the coins has a 100K mintage...

Meh, greater crimes have certainly been committed. To be fair the mint has stated that each coin in the set was specially struck for the set so on some level you could argue that each has a mintage of 100K. Just say'n image
  • Prices are definitely in an uptrend now and how long they keep going up is anyones guess. Sealed boxes seem like they got hit the least in the downtrend from about november 20 to December 15. I think we hit a bottom around mid-december and now bandwagoning jumpers will be jumping on with fear of prices going higher which should only add fuel to the fire.

I had already offered $1,500 right here on this thread. I was then told someone else offered more than me after I extended the offer and it sold to them. While I was not even given a chance to match this other bidder, I am happy the owner netted close to 3x his previous offer simply after I extended a public bid here. You might think he could at least send me a pound of nice chocolates or something ... right

"Or 10% of the proceeds for facilitating the sale."

I had not thought of that, but it makes sense to me (wink). To be honest though, when someone "secretly" writes the coin owner and tops my bid (and I say "secretly", because I was told the higher bidder asked for that to be the case), I would simply like the chance to match or beat the new higher bid level.... is that unreasonable? And, no offense at all intended to this owner, but this is also why I shy away from posting buy prices over on the BST board. What sense does it make to post a fair offer price (in this case 150% above the previous highest offer as stated by the owner) only to lose the coin to someone coming in and offering a bit more. OK, my "mini-rant" is over ... let me be clear... I like this board member and do not question his integrity whatsoever (and I am happy for him that he got his price on his coin). The only "sad" thing is that I try to not get outbid on moderns this way too often ... had the owner informed me of the new competing bid, I would have likely matched or beaten it (if for nothing else, out of the principle of the matter).

  • Just pulled a trigger on a 70 PCGS Gold Mart set at $1195 that appear to be Mercantis. Looks like they might be sold out at that price. They also have "Mercanti" PCGS 70 sets at a price of $1295 that also show sold out. Not sure between the difference between the two sets listed. Maybe they'll send me flags. image ....or they'll send me some bottom of the barrel slabs.

Naw, my post was confusing. But so is their website. I just emailed them asking what the deal is. Two different listings for sets that look like PCGS 70 Mercanti sets at different prices (both sold out).

For $150 plus shipping it can be a Flag set IIRC. Nice deal for you! Wish I'd seen those when I bought the Mercanti sets from them, though I still think they'll be a winner on a 12-18 month basis.

There are many on the boards--myself included-- that suspect the current prices are a pretty good deal compared to what these will be selling for in a year or so. Heck, maybe even less time than that. But people have been wrong before--keep that in mind! To be honest I haven't been into numismatics that long so I do not claim to be an expert.

$1400 is a little high I think. You can score Flag 70s under that without too much looking on ebay. Remember that Mercanti and Tombstone First Strikes can be converted to Flags for $100+ if the price disparity continues persist over time. $1200 and just slightly less seems to be the very bottom of the market right now for any PCGS 70s. Spend a few days scanning the BST here and at the NGC marketplace and don't forget ebay. Some sellers have smartly listed their coins so you can get ebay bucks and that is cash back into your pocket.

Of course, this is just one way of playing the game. There are many. (ie, just buying the keys, buying cheap but good raw keys, buying sealed, 69s, etc. It hurts after awhile.).

Raw keys are scarce on eBay. Tonight I found 138 listings for the 2011-P reverse proof, of which only 3 were raw. 69's can be acquired around $270, which I think is a great price.

If you want raw Keys buy eBay sets for around $650, sell the three commons for $150ish. Net price around $250 each and a chance to pick up some "70"s. Another option is look for a seller with lots of coins ,69s and a return/exchange policy. With these sellers I've asked them before bidding or BIN if they would cherry pick a nice 69 if I won their coin. Most have said yes-they probably don't want to hassle w exchange/returns and I have gotten some very very nice 69s- some of which are likely 70s.

What's with MCM? They had a half dozen sets (FS-flag) on ebay which had the following statement:

They all got cancelled this morning. image Someone must be minding the store!!!!

Have I missed something really important? What's a "tombstone" label? Are the coins different in some way, or are we just looking at another label variety?

Boy you guys are rah rah on these. IMO, interest is already fading except amongst flippers. As a collector I bought one raw at 600 and that is it, period. Others I know have gotten to the "I don't give a D---" stage, and are saving all the more by abondoning the series.

Aren't we still in the "dispersion" phase? I'd expect the frenzy to subside while the market works off its excess. The 2006 sets sold out, but it took a few months. In that case, the dispersion was happening during the sales period. Once that was done, the 2006 sets did rather well.

There are fewer of these sets to disperse, but they all sold in a bunch. Once these are gone, I would expect them to do better than the 2006 sets did, by virtue of the fact that there are 60% fewer of them than the 2006 sets.

How much better? The 2006 sets ran up to 4X issue price and then settled back to 3X times issue price. If these sets run up to a conservative 5X issue price (due to the lower mintage) of $1,500 and then settle back 25% like the 2006 sets did, you'd be looking at around $1,125. And this doesn't take into account that the 2006 sets have bumped up recently because of the excitement over the 2011 sets.

I don't think this story is over by any means. JMHO.

I am not sure who first coined the phase but it is easier to type than "non-Mercanti signature - non-flag First Strike" label. I have also heard them refered to as a "Black Stripe" label or non-signature label (which was fine until the flags started coming out).

Coin and Mercanti are bulk submissions if I understand right.

  • BTW--Gold Mart has more Tombstone 70 sets at $1195. You're looking at $1210 shipped if paying with a check. (No affiliation to Gold Mart)

Yes those buffs are on the downswing now that you mention it.
So I guess coins you will have to check your analyses

    Well, just Love coins, period.
  • 2 recent sales of anacs graded buffalo's on e-bay would disagree with your downturn trend......and the listings for available nice coins are getting more and more limited.....expect the same with the 25th sets in higher grades IMO

Sorry, I couldn't understand you. Please remove your foot! image

I recommend you just stay with what ever you collect and watch the flatline that reflects the current profit they are producing. In fact, if the buff's are trending down, what ever you are holding is doing the same and maybe even at a fast pace.

Maybe you should take Wondercoin up on his gentleman's bet.

Seriously, are you just jealous, and those who post like you? I understand someone who differs over types of coins to collect based on personal taste, but seriously, do you really believe these are going to bomb? Really? Basic, fundamental numismatic calculation shows these to be excellent cases for strong performance over the next 3-5 years...and even in the next 6-18 mos.

I really don't get people wanting to come in and bash obvious winners. You're entitled to your opinion, but as I've learned, on these boards respect comes from respect given. And these sets deserve some numismatic respect.
