Shipping Expensive Coins

keojkeoj Posts: 1,026 ✭✭✭✭
Just a curiosity question.....if one has a very expensive coin or a collection, how does one ship them? By expensive, I mean over $100K. I know that businesses use Fedex and then self insure but what about collectors that don't have business insurance? Again, this doens't apply to me.

I agree... deliver personally. Well worth the expense - consider that insurance. Cheers, RickO

Sometimes acting as a mule and delivering the coin personally is cheaper than the insurance. image

While buying a round-trip ticket keeps it out of the hands of other carriers, it still doesn't cover you if you're robbed in transit. If you have an insurance policy for your collection through a collectibles insurer like Hugh Wood, a quick call to your agent will reveal the preferred way of shipping something and having it covered. They may prefer a traditional shipper over hand-delivery.

I email my insurance person ( Barb Wingo ) and buy a ryder. Easy peasy.

Delivering yourself without insurance is not without risk.

The option I use is parcelpro.com. For shipments over $50,000 there are special rules. I've always just broken my shipments down to less than $50,000 each. If it is one coin and you can't split it, then you'll have to call them. They made their name in the jewelry business.

If you are an infrequent shipper, just go registered mail with full declared value and be done with it. They will pretty much guarantee delivery.

I am not sure how many of you even step out of your house each day, with all the paranoia I see here. Everything has risks. For me, I would rather handle the deal myself than entrust such a package to a delivery system. Sure, if the plane crashes, bad news.. oh well. Other than that, I am prepared. Cheers, RickO

To send a 2 pound package via Registered Mail with $25,000 insurance (their max) is about $60 or so. Thus, 4 Registered Mail packages with a total value of $100,000 is getting close to the cost of an airline ticket.

    Plus the cost of...

    * Renting car, or cab fair.
    * Lodging... unless you're going to drop and go.
    * Your time. If you're going to drop and go, you'll have to be there when they're open. Otherwise you'll use vacation or other personal time. Unless you're self employed or own your own business, and can take off whenever you like.

Starts getting a little more expensive to be a mule, all considered.

I'd break them up into separate packages, each with their own insurance and their own tracking info. This would also help you avoid "putting all your eggs in one basket".

But you don't get a 1/2 oz of peanuts at the post office.
