In Regards to my 1909 Lincoln Cent... WIN SOME!!

Ok, so I had about $125. into the coin (eBay auction) and figure $75. for PCGS EXPRESS grading (including postage both ways).
I still think it's a pretty coin, but I do defer to PCGS with their judgement regarding the toning.

I'd say it's a lesson learned, but not really.
I'll still be back scouring eBay for the potential little gem.

    I've seen Lincolns that looked like that and still graded.

    Blue copper is the kiss of death. Lately, anyway. I'm sure we can post many blue-toned cents in problem-free holders. But of late PCGS seems suspicious of MS70.

    It does not mean they got it RIGHT. Remember, code 91 means QUESTIONABLE color, not recolored, etc.

    Pat, Is the color a bit on the green side (as the photos suggest), or is it our favorite shade of blue? Because if its the former, I can understand your disbelief as greenish blue tends to be natural -- and we all know the story on the other hue. Just curious....Mike

    Allowing for the fact that we are using an image, and PCGS saw the actual coin, I think they got it wrong.
    That has the appearance of an original bronze coin to me. If you want to sell it, you might give it a shot
    on e-Bay or the BST and see what happens. To avoid any charges of misrepresentation, leave it in the
    Genuine holder. If the best offer isn't enough, you can always keep it and move on.

    this one is straight from circulation. newer, and a zincoln, but...it IS blue, and NT all the way.

    Couple possibilities:

    1) PCGS seems more comfortable when toned lincs/indian have a slightly different obverse vs. reverse look - on blue coins especially. matching sides alone could explain the baggage
    2) If the coin is held at an angle, does a light brown/tan pattern of toning show up, sometimes a grid. There's a way, I believe to see surface etching that MS70 tends to leave behind that could explain the baggage
    3) magenta mixed in with the blue is the kiss of death at PCGS. That's not the issue here
    4) Yellow/gold/brown flecks mixed in with the blue and your golden, no pun intended

    I need to be in front of some of my coins to give the best description.

    Essentially though, a dull tan/brown haze can be seen at an agle. I've noticed at least several questionable coins have a grid pattern, and the only reason I can imagine for this is that the grid is highlighting slight inconsistencies in the planchet metal mix, which should be intermittent along parrallel striations. Maybe the MS70 reacts more aggressively with tin or zinc portions near the surface than the copper.

    I didn't have a very long conversation about it, but Andy Skrabalak mentioned that he thought MS70 could damage copper surfaces to me a few months ago so I started looking. I need to go back and compare notes with him.

    Too bad...I thought that had a great chance, as evidenced by the numerically holdered blue Lincoln in a previous post in this thread...what will you do, if you don't mind sharing...crack and resubmit later? Live with it and keep it? Resell it right away in the Genied holder?

    I won't crack it out and resubmit. I've never done that and won't start now. I'll just keep it the way it is.
