I doubt anyone purposely toned that coin. Pure silver tones readily and the toning on that is consistent with album or some other form of cardboard storage toning.

Here are two that I found in one of my albums. I did nothing to them except remove them from the album and put them in capsules...the blue rim seems to be a common natural toning effect.

Both reverses show no toning...

Sorry for the pics but they were quickly done hand held in the natural grey Massachusetts daylight...

Still hard to say, looks like cardboard rim toning, but being a 1996 which is one of the more expensive dates......maybe toned on purpose?

I learn towards AT but very difficult what PCGS says

NT. Had an ASE proof in a US Mint 1993 Philadelphia set cardboard holder develop the same look.

Some years ago I received a silver eagle for speaking at a club in Massachusetts. It was mounted in a blue holder with velvet and satin on the inside. When I received the piece it was blast white. A year or so later I took a look at it, and found one side had toned to quite a nice color. I flipped the coin over in hopes to duplicating the toning on the other side. It didn’t work.

So far as I didn’t apply anything to the coin to make turn in the holder, and see no reason to think that anything toned the piece except the holder, I’d call it NT.

IMHO it is NT. The ASEs, being 99% pure silver, seem to be affected by the sulphurs that are present in many cardboard holders. I guess then it is questionable if the ASE was put there to tone it (AT) or just to collect it and store it (NT). Maybe this (intent) is the crux of the AT/NT dilemma.

I'm not sure either way, but there are two things about this toning that look off to me.

(1) Why is the toning restricted only to the surfaces inside the obverse rim, and not on the raised edge around the rim? That raised edge would normally be exposed even if the coin was stored in a holder.

(2) The blue toning appears to lie on top of the red toning, particularly from 4:00 to 9:00. I seem to recall reading somewhere that toning progresses through a known sequence of colors. If the toning started at the rim, and worked inward, I do not think it would be possible for the color to transition red-blue-red like that, or at least not that dramatically.

NT. I've got some from 2005 that look a lot like those. Just been sitting on the top shelf of a cabinet for the past 6 years. I've got the blue ring and some reddish purples. Very nice. I take a peek once or twice a year, then forget about them for awhile.

Looks acceptable to me. ASE's tone like crazy. I have a Whitman album and a Dansco album and some have toned up in both while others in the same albums look almost original. I have no explanation as to why some tone and others don't.

Looks acceptable to me but really, what does it matter?

Unlike a 90% Silver coin, these 99.999% silver SAE's will tone in a matter of months in the right conditions which may or may not be chosen for a specific purpose.

The truly sad part about it is that folks pay insane money for these which gets even crazier if its in a PCGS slab thereby attaining the "NT" blessing.
