Does it appear to have been improperly cleaned? Hairlines from die polish or cleaning or both? Do you think it will grade?

Check the vam, It looks like it may be from proof dies which have been polished. They tend to look alot like hairlines.

The lines around the rim appear to be die polish, but the lines in front of the portrait appear incuse and that spells trouble.

    My first thought as well.
It's hard to tell from a pic though.

TomB, you are correct. It does look llike there has been a cleaning in front of the face and along the eagle's back. I think it will genuine.

Looks OK to me, send it in and let us know what happens.

I worried about the same thing, which is why I asked.

If they're cleaning hairlines it's impressive that someone could bring them all the way to the very edge of the nose and not touch it.

Keeping the coin's actual size in mind, is it likely these would be spotted with a 10x loupe? Looking at the smaller images, which are still pretty large, they're undetectable.

    A shame, really.

Your large images are showing to me what looks to be a played with coin. That and the damage at the bootom of the neck lead me to say it will not grade clean.

If nothing else, it's a gorgeous 21 with a superb strike. If it was mine I'd sent it in. It's a reasonable gamble with lots of potential up-side. How's the luster in-hand?

For comparison, here's one of mine that lives in a PCGS MS65 holder. There are loads of die polish lines on some of these 21s. I see some of the same lines over the eagle's back and in the text above Liberty. I'm not sure about in front of the portrait.

If you don't like yours let me know. These well struck 21s are hard to find. image

These ladies sure look scabby when enlarged too much. Mine is well-struck. Yours is even better!

My first thought was "Holy crap that thing is bigger than a dinner plate on my monitor!". My second thought was "How do you suppose they carried these things around in their pockets back in the day?" image

    Cheers!
