Poll-state and state park quarters? Which do you collect?

rec78rec78 Posts: 5,949 ✭✭✭✭✭
Hi, I thought it was fun to collect the state quarters, however I have a hard time collecting the new state park quarters and haven't started yet. This may be a future endeavor or maybe not for me, I don't know yet. So I decided to start this poll to see where collectors stand on these. I would also like to hear others opinions on the new state park quarters. Please base your vote on what you collect TODAY. Any and all comments welcome. Thanks, Bob

I believe that you are referring to the National Park quarters (though it would not surprise me if State Park quarters are next image ).

As I have said elsewhere, nobody appreciates, cherishes, loves, etc. our great National Parks more than I do, but even as a serious coin collector, I cannot get into collecting these quarters. I enjoyed doing the state quarters with my children, but they lost me with the territories. Hot Springs, of all places, is not where I would have started the National Park run, either.

I have a few books of state quarters but have no interest in the state parks series.

    Seasonal story.
I got the hint that a certain seventh grader (grandchild) wanted a state quarter book 'without the map' for Christmas.
Evidently she has a little stash of the quarters and needs a book to plug them into as long as it has 'all the mints'.image

Yes you correct--That just goes to show how far removed I am from collecting them at this time. Bob

I do not collect them as a focus endeavor... I do, however, have all the SHQ's since I purchased all the mint sets those years. Have no idea what I will do with them. Cheers, RickO

I had a complete set of Silver Proof State Quarters, but sold them when silver was over 40 to fund a dime purchase.image

I have a mint set of my son's birth year that has some silver state park quarters in it but I hope that doesn't count as a collector?

Last year I was buying one bag of each from the mint, this year they decided to raise the price on the bags by almost 15 bucks, so I have stopped. One bag of the yosemite had the extra boulder on about 15 of them out of 100. Even going to the bank and asking it seems they never get the new ones, so the mint wants you to spend 49.95 for 25.00 of quarters. Good luck Enjoy tom image

I'm collecting them out of circulation. I can afford that easily, and I've actually gotten 7 of them (including one D mint) already- all since November 2011. Most of them have been sourced from the drive through at the local McDonald's.

So, no only does it give me a way to stay in the hobby when I can't afford to purchase world coins, currency or classics, it gives me something to search for and something to hunt for upgrades on. I still check every coin I get, but lately finding upgrades hasn't been very easy- I'm not sure I've gotten more than 2 upgrades at all in 2011.

I collect the ATBs in both PCGS First Strike 70 DCAM Silver and the 5 oz in PCGS MS 69 DMPL First Strike. 8 more years I think left. I collect the State Quarter in the First Day Covers only missing Mass. One day I will get it to finish up the collection. I had collected the state quarters in PCGS MS 66-68s but slowly eliminating my collection. I stopped in 2004.

I got rolls of ATB quarters from the bank for the first 7 or 8 issues, but got distracted and haven't grabbed any for at least a year. The low mintages are intriguing. 20 or 30 years ago, a mintage of about 30 million would have made a splash, but I don't think we'll ever again see the number of collectors to make 30 million a sought-after coin. Then again, Cladking might point out that if these are ignored for long enough, a number of true rarities will emerge. They'll be fun to watch.

BTW, I do like the series very much. Some of the designs are very cool.

I drone-like get the mint sets and proof sets every year.

I've been doing it since the 50's (carefully waiting until they weren't worth anything to begin), so if sheer inertia counts as a motivation, I guess you could say I collect them.

I have a complete uncirculated P&D from the uncirculated sets from the Mint as well as the complete proof sets, so I no longer collect these. Their value is dropped off quite a bit this past year and some dealers can't get rid of them fast enough. The proof sets, 99-08, at one time were selling on eBay anywhere between $110-$135, and selling for less than $80.

I am collecting the ATB quarters, both uncirculated sets from the Mint, and the proofs. These will probably end up doing no better than the statehood series on value.

I collect Proof sets so I answered "both." I don't collect the business strikes of these coins although I did get a set State Quarters when my in-laws moved into an assisted living facility.

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

My wife was pulling the state series out of circulation, so I started buying her PCGS 69PRDCAM silver sets as well. When they ended the parks just sort of came along for the ride.
    When in doubt, don't.

I buy silver proof sets on eBay at melt at will so I'm a big fan image. Aside from the '99 set, I've purchased all of the silver quarters through 2010 at melt or sometimes 10 to 20% below melt by stacking rebates (too bad those days are gone image). Granted I don't see silver dropping to $5/oz anytime soon, but it is nice to have some amount of numismatic protection to plain silver stacking. The only problem is storage...Mint sets take up too much room image
