Unopened 1953 proof set arrived. Opening it live.

The proof set was on from this thread: http://forums.collectors.com/messageview.cfm?catid=26&threadid=839215

It just arrived today. Here's the top of the box.

image

Here are the sides that are taped up.

image

Here's the bottom and other two sides. It obviously had what looks like scotch tape across it at one time. The residue seems pretty old, it's "crystalized" and feels rough like sandpaper.

image

So, what do you think? A fools errand or do DCAM gems await?

I thought you said he had other 1953 Proof Sets and the one you bought was not part of the 5 pictured? If so, then you purchased this from the same seller as the one mentioned in the other thread...correct.

The unopened lot the dealer had contained more than 5 sets. He just had an auction for 5 of the sets. I don't know if this set was in the ebay picture or not.

    More to come...........

I know what I would do if I had 5 or 10 sets that were delivered to the original purchaser and then bought now as a group.
I'd open several sets - if no cameos or varieties, I'd sell the rest as unopened "lottery tickets" to maximize my resale prices.

Of course there is still a chance of a big score, but cameos tend to come in "runs".

I don't think I got a box of washers, you can see the copper color of the penny through the tissue paper.

Since this thread is taking so long to play out, I thought I would chime in on my own newest proof set hunting expedition. I stopped by a local B&M today to snoop. I saw a 1954 proof set in a Capital holder. The clear outer layers of the holder are scuffed up, beat up, cloudy in appearance and the back side has tape reside on it. On top of that, the three silver coins have developed a very heavy white milky haze on both sides. All together these things make it very hard to get a good look at the coins in the holder.

Drawing upon vast knowledge and experienceimage gained after years in the trenches and muck looking for jewels amongst the dross, dreck and droppings of modern cr*p, I lloked closely at the three silver coins, with a loupe, under the brightest overhead light I could find in the shop. Applying my genetically encoded "supervision" to the outerlayers of the holder and to the milky haze on the three coins, I determined that all three have:

    1. significant frost on the devices on both sides of the coins;

    2. possibly, just possibly, black watery mirrored fields.

In otherwords, I may have found a silver Cameo trifecta hiding in plain sight. Even better would be a tio of coins with minimal or no hairlines.

The nickel and cent are so obscured by the damaged holder that I can not even get a good view of them. Maybe they will also be nice.

I will am picking up the set tomorrow and can hardly wait to liberate the three coins from the damaged holder; and to possibly remove the milky haze.

Back to the OP, I hope he scores some DCAM's in the unopened 53 set.

what does this have to do with 25th Anniversary sets and are people allowed to just make threads like this that push the ASE ones lower? I for one say shenanigans, this isn't what this forum is meant for.

    Ok, back from dinner.

Photos didn't turn out that good through the cello, but here we go anyway.

    Here's the cent.....

    image

It's a nice PR66-67 Red in my opinion. No haze but no cameo. image I'm 50-50 on whether or not it's worth slabbing.

    Here's the nickel....

    image

Bad photo, but I'm 99% certain this will get a 66-67 CAM. It also has uniform toning with little to no haze. I'm definitely sending this to PCGS for slabbing.

    Here's the dime....

    image

Brilliant proof, no haze. Not worth slabbing.

    Here's the quarter.....

    image

This one is odd, obverse is mirrored, reverse is like a circulation strike with cartwheel luster. No toning and little or no haze. Not worth slabbing.

    Here's the half.....

    image

A brilliant proof, no cameo. image It has toning around the periphery, probably from being in contact with the tissue paper since the cello cracked and it was essentially loose in the box. A little haze, but not much. Probably the standard PR66-67. I think I'll send it in for grading with the nickel just for the heck of it.

So, I'll send in the nickel and half, and maybe the cent. If the nickel cams, I'll consider the whole episode a wash.

In the end, I'm happy with it. It was quite a bit of entertainment for the cost and maybe I'll get a cam to add to my collection of 50's proof sets.

I'll try and get some better pics of the nickel and half tomorrow out of the cello.

When I get the grades back, I'll let everyone know how it turned out.

As someone has mentioned before, cameos tend to come together in "runs." As such, I am sure that the seller knows this this too, and given the volume of proof material that he deals with, I wouldn't anticipate that the odds of finding cameos are high at all. If you have additional unopened sets, then I would recommend that you resell them without opening them!
